Add to that now is the PERFECT time to trade players for picks? Why? Because teams havent properly calibrated for the new CBA where both 1st and 2nd picks are significantly more valuable than before due to the need for young cheap talent to avoid the tax aprons. Teams are stupidly giving away an excesive amount of picks to get slightly closer for a year or two.

If the Mavs want to max out around Flagg for the amount of time they control gis contract, they need to stop playing checkers
Teams are giving away first rounders IMo because they aren’t worth a damn. What good is 5 picks in the 23-28 range? I get 5 O Max’s and Jaden Hardy’s?

People will try to emulate the Thunder but when doing so they better mention all of the top talent they acquired and not many of it is late round picks. But Thunder aren’t the bar they are the standard. Pritchard is running circles around everyone and is on a different planet.

Everyone admits the East is in shambles due to the ACL injuries….

Look out West. Behind the Thunder is wide open. Austin Reevs just declined his option, Grizzlies look a mess, T Wolves look a mess, Nuggets just fired their GM and coach a few months ago, Clippers are the Clippers….

We are afraid of the boogeyman and there isn’t one except the Thunder who just went 7 games with the Indiana Pacers….

No that’s not what I’m saying doesn’t work. I’m saying the teams that trade a star for future first round picks doesn’t work. I think people like it because we love the uncertainty and hope that the future brings. It’s the same pushback on trading Micah…yes three first rounders sound great until you realize you traded him to a contender that’s pitching in the late 20s.

Same thing with AD. You would be trading him to a contender that’s actively going all in and trying to win.

Orlando, GS are all homegrown talent. They didn’t trade a star for multiple picks to get better.

Mark my words Mavs will be a top 5 team next year. And will be even better the year after when Flagg gets even better who’s already NBA ready.
If you think Dallas is a top 5 team next year, pass to me whatever has you so optimistic

If you dont think first are worth a damn, you don't know anything about NBA economics.

First round picks are more valuable then before. Teams giving up a large chunk of their future draft capital for an inch closer to contention are going to crippled both financially and in terms or roster flexibility very soon. Ill say again: Some NBA teams havent recalibrated their structure for the new CBA.

Why are teams giving up 5 1st round picks for guys like Desmond Bane and Mikal Bridges? These aren’t even All Stars let alone stars.

The reason why I say they aren’t worth a damn because you can’t even trade 1st rounders in consecutive years…so yes those late 1st rounders aren’t worth much in the eyes of a contender. It means more to the Wizards or Jazz who stink every year anyway just for Spurs, Sixers and Mavs to get the top picks when they are playoff teams who suffered injuries.

You literally just said they would be around a 55 win team lol….they would’ve been good for 2nd in the West lol….
Im talking over the next few seasons unless you start rebuilding. This core may win 55 regular season games at some point in that span, but they arent getting past the second round of the playoffs.

I believe I said I see them as a 40-45 win team

Because NY is stupid lol. Orlando maybe ok because they are so young and cheap. But NY is going to have to start selling off players soon. NY is 53k below the 2nd apron.

Orlando would illustrate my point of building through the draft and then being agressive when you are close

Those pics are valuable to contenders because it allows them to mine cheap talent and stay ahead of the 2nd apron

Fair enough. So who are these teams they are going to beat them in the second round? Who are the top 5 teams out West?

lol come on man “stupid” is a cop out lol. They aren’t the only teams doing it either. Knicks will compete for a Eastern Conference championship next year.

Alot of the other teams doing it are stupid too. Its been that way for sometime. How often do those trades amount to very little Vs. anything really substantial

Fair enough lol. I think teams have realized their picks don’t really amount to much but ok. Guess we will see how that fairs.

Pacers sent a lot of 1sts for Siakam…meanwhile Raptors stink lol.

OKC
Denver
Hoston
Minnesota
GS

All those teams would beat Dallas in the 2nd round.

Probably the Clippers too. Maybe even the Lakers if they make some moves
Yeah I don’t see it but ok. I’m not sure why you hold those teams in high regard but the Mavs can’t be as good as them. What NBA team are you a fan of? Maybe that will explain things.

Not really. You can get those picks easily by taking negative assets. But other than that, teams, or at least smart teams, arent just going to hand them out
Mavs didn’t have a pick in 2022….or a first rounder….were able to trade two 2nd rounders to get Jaden Hardy. Also in that draft Max Christie, Jaylin Williams, Nembhard and Caleb Houston also second rounders. These days there are good prospects that fall to the second…

Boston

Mavericks are going to rely way to much on Davis and Irving. Both incredibly unreliable players

Ok you aren’t a Mav fan so I see the push back lol.

I don’t think they will rely on them. AD until he gets hurt for sure. But they’ve shown they can competent with players from the G League. With Hardy being a year older, O Max…..Lively and Gafford…and that Flagg guy? I’m excited.

You are describing exactly what the Thunder did. Got SGA, tanked it out and slowly added around him with an insane bevy of R1 picks.
Spurs doing a JV level of same with Wemby.

Minny did it this Dallas way. They got veteran stars to surround Ant with and made good runs but had a very real ceiling and then the vets gotta be moved at 75 cents on the dollar because who can afford them all.

I am fine with Dallas giving this group a month and seeing if you gel right away and other teams face injury woes but by trade deadline, I would be looking for trade partners for any of my guys over 28 except Kyrie. Thunder wants AD? Sweet. LA wants Gafford? Awesome. Feed me former top 5 picks and future R1s. I'd rather win 28 games than 41.
