Three former Dallas Cowboys got one step closer to Canton on Tuesday when they were named semifinalists for the NFL Hall of Fame with the inductees set to be named on Jan. 31, the day before the Super Bowl.

Former defensive end Charles Haley, a five-time finalist, made the cut again along with former head coach Jimmy Johnson, who orchestrated the three world titles in the 1990s (unless you believe Jerry was the mastermind). He was also joined by former teammate Darren Woodson, the safety of those 1990s defenses who was a three-time All Pro.

The odds seem to be against all of them, given the fact that only five pure safeties are in the Hall of Fame, Johnson only coached the Cowboys for a handful of seasons and had an unsuccessful stint in Miami, and Haley has missed the final cut several times before despite having won more Super Bowls than any player in NFL history with the Cowboys and 49ers.

The finalist list will be announced on Jan. 8. You can bet pretty safely that Haley will be on that list again, but the other two would be a surprise.

I hope all 3 get it but if I had to pick 1 I really hope Haley gets it, I don't know of any guys with 5 SB rings who are not in the HOF. I think Haley stormy relations with some in the media has hindered him from getting what he has earned.

I think all three are deserving, but if Haley doesn't get in, it says bad things about the integrity and brainpower of the voters. It wasn't like he was some 4th string scrub on those 5 Super Bowl teams.

I have a good feeling this year that Haley may finally get in......I think that many in the media, and post 2000 NFL HOFers may have new blood who don't have an axe to grind. The old fogeys may believe Haley has learned a lesson and vote him in. I know they know he deserves it.

Enough with the grudges and vote him in NOW.

Again, expand the pool and not just writers. Then make their voting public so if they have a heavy bias they will take a huge credibility hit.

Any other players with 5 rings from only playing? I know some have more from playing and coaching.

I just looked it up and Haley is the only player to earn 5 rings as a player. He should have been a 1st ballot lock for the HOF.

Writers are vindictive and petty. If he doesn't make it this year they should all be ashamed.

Cliff Harris deserves it above any other Cowboy not in right now. IMNSHO anyway.

Agree about Capt. Crash and would also say that Chuck Howley and Harvey Martin are just as deserving. Drew Pearson too.

1 Joe Greene has five rings, four as a player and one as a special assistant for player personnel with Pittsburgh.

I saw Mean Joe's #75 jersey retired in person at Heinz Field. Was pretty cool, even though I loathe the Steelers and their whiney fans.

Being an old linebacker, I'm still pulling for Chuck Howley as well.

Chuck Howley could play at a very high level today including at the same level of some who will go into the HOF eventually. I encourage people to look at games Howley played in and not take my word for it. 4.5+ speed post 60s knee repair in a LB who could tackle and cover and had better instincts than Lee Roy Jordan who was comparable to some MLBs in the HOF already. JMO.

Add Harvey Martin to the mix of Cowboys who should get into the HOF. In any event, there's no reason some of these folks mentioned shouldn't be in the ROH.
