Greg Hardy is staying overnight while trying to hammer out a deal.

When it was reported earlier today that free agent defensive end Greg Hardy was coming to Dallas for a visit, we knew things had gotten serious. But, it was also reported that he was going to visit the Seattle Seahawks and possibly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was also suggested that no team was planning to sign him without hearing from the league about any suspension coming up in 2015 for Hardy. That could be a significant suspension in the range of six games, but for the Cowboys to be progressing this far, they probably have a good idea of what it will be.

The Cowboys may not be waiting on any of that as they are still meeting with Hardy, and he's planning to stay overnight.

A day of discussions has now turned into an evening of dinner.

Greg Hardy doesn't have a contract but his visit with the Cowboys is far from done. A source said the defensive end is scheduled to go to dinner with members of the coaching staff this evening and will stay overnight as the two sides try to hammer out a contract.

In addition, Seattle has come out and said they don't have a visit planned, and Tampa Bay also says they have no firm plans. The Cowboys might be trying to put together an incentive-laden contract that would pay Hardy for part of this year, and then leave options open for the following years.

Stay tuned...

It took a while for a market to emerge for free-agent defensive end Greg Hardy. Now, a deal may be done before the market ever really gets rolling.

Just a few days after the Raiders declared that they won’t be pursuing Hardy, the Cowboys are. Per multiple reports, he’s spending the night in Dallas after visiting with the team on Tuesday, and he’ll take a physical on Wednesday.

The Seahawks and Buccaneers also are believed to be interested in Hardy. The Seahawks denied the existence of specific plans for Hardy to visit the team amid multiple reports of his intent to take a trip to Seattle, possibly to avoid catching any P.R. flak for a guy who may sign with the Cowboys before ever leaving Texas.

Hardy’s situation raises various questions, from the media and fan backlash given his 2014 domestic violence situation to the still-looming possibility of a suspension to the potential for another incident that would force a team to pay Hardy while on the Commissioner’s-Exempt list. But the Cowboys need pass rushers, Hardy needs a job, and it’s entirely possible that the price will be right given the absence of teams willing to pay him huge money.

A day of discussions has now turned into an evening of dinner.

Greg Hardy doesn’t have a contract but his visit with the Cowboys is far from done. A source said the defensive end is scheduled to go to dinner with members of the coaching staff this evening and will stay overnight as the two sides try to hammer out a contract.

Hardy is regarded as the best defensive player left on the free agent market. He played in only one game last season after being placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. But he collected 26 sacks in his final two full seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He had a career high of 15 sacks in 2013 when he made the Pro Bowl.

Those 15 sacks are more than Jeremy Mincey, Henry Melton and Tyrone Crawford totaled for the Cowboys last season.

There were reports earlier in the day that Hardy, who still faces a suspension from commissioner Roger Goodell before he can return to the field, also had visits scheduled with Seattle and Tampa Bay. But as the day wore on club officials in those cities told reporters that no visits with Hardy had been set.

Any contract with Hardy is expected to include various incentives _ refer to last year’s deal the Cowboys reached with Henry Melton _ to give him market value while protecting the club from an uncertain future as to how many games he can play in 2015.

So how often does a player take physical, when he wasn't injured the year before, and not get a contract?

Physical first then talk money. No need to negotiate over damaged goods.

See that is strange many of the signings this year and years past always had, Player A Signed a 4 year deal with Miami pending. I figured the physical was one of the final steps that sort of says, "Ok you got your money, lets see how that knee looks from last year."

Players take physicals after negotiations typically.

Case in point when Mathews had agreed to terms with the Eagles in principle but had yet to take a physical.

Just last year Roger Saffold had his new contract voided after failing his physical.

Most everything is likely agreed upon.
