we see those kinds of hits every sunday. i was very surprised there was an injury to be honest. that's how you know it's common, and legal.

Look, when you see Jeff "the Animal" Heath bearing down on you all you can do is pray for mercy.

Dude got slumped. Everybody needs to just get over it.

To be honest, the hit didn't even look that hard to me. It was the result of Lockette laying there motionless that made it look like a vicious hit in retrospect. Heath hit him from the front, not the side. So how was it a blindside hit? He didn't lead with his helmet either. And if it was a violation, why wasn't he fined? I don't even think they called it a penalty during the game.

If anything Lockett led with his helmet. He lowered his head which very well could have been the reason he was injured
They were face to face and I agree, had there been no injury there wouldn't have been a penalty

What is laughable is that when Blandino explains the rule, he leaves out the part that actually makes it a "BLINDSIDE" block.

Here is exactly what the NFL Rule Book says (it is identifying players who are considered to be in a "defenseless posture") -- "9. A player who receives a “blindside” block when the path of the blocker is toward or parallel to his own end line, and he approaches the opponent from behind or from the side."

That last part is what makes it a blindside block -- "he approaches the opponent from behind or from the side." But Blandino leaves out that part of the rule. He says the only parts to consider are the direction of the blocker (running toward or parallel to his own end line) and making contact with the head or neck area (even if the opponent ducks into the block). He never even mentions anything about "approaching the opponent from behind or from the side."

They threw that flag after Lockett was laying there for a bit and wasn't getting up. I believe that they felt they were going to call a penalty and justify it later because he didn't move. I can't stand that the refs throw the flag to cover their collective butts even if they didn't see what happened. The NFL is leaving a bad taste in my mouth lately with all the crap and I'm starting to wonder how the league will continue like this.

Truly ridiculous how they pick and choose to interpret the rules. The league likes to use their "integrity of the game" doctrine when investigating players, they need to apply that same integrity towards officials and rulings.

Being a Cowboys fan is tough. We have to deal with BS sensationalism like this all the time.

Maybe it's in light of everything that's happened to today with the Hardy stuff, but this one really pissed me off.

THIS HIT WAS NOT ILLEGAL. IT DIDN'T RECEIVE A FINE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ILLEGAL. It was only flagged because the flag had no impact on the game (cowboys were going to kneel anyway) other than to possibly quell emotions and threaten penalty to any retaliation.

*** off PFT.

What was not legal about that hit? It wasn't blindside. It was face to face, right?

If that hit was illegal then I don't know the rulebook anymore.

I remember this same type of thing happening to Woodson. He got flagged and fined for the viciousness of the hit. I believe it was against the Cardinals later in his career. It was a typical textbook Woody tackle but the impact of it was such that it immediately drew a flag and a fine the next week.

that's one I remember.

To be fair though, that one was in the early day of the new rule, IIRC.

They were still trying to get it right. Still trying, I guess.

But also to be fair, I didn't mind the flag from the officials on Sunday. It appeased the Seahawks without any real consequence. They knew Dallas was going to kneel.

Every day this league gets closer and closer to making room for a new league to pop up, like the world league of the seventies, eighties. Call it the American league of REAL FOOTBALL.

Today it just might catch on.
