Cowboys running back Joseph Randle went AWOL from the team’s practice facility on Wednesday, and that’s not the only issue he’s facing.

The NFL is likely to suspend Randle for a violation of the league’s personal-conduct policy, according to ESPN.

That suspension arises from a February incident in which Randle was arrested and the mother of his child got a protection from abuse order against him. Although Randle did not face criminal charges, the NFL has conducted its own investigation and found that he violated league policies, according to ESPN.

Could this be the reason why he stormed out of practice yesterday?

Not sure. My guess is this latest incident of being AWOL is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Stay tuned as I'm certain we will get the answer in time.

On a separate note, I'd like to see some criticism come the NFL's way for yet another ridiculous and pathetic handling of a player behavior issue.

The league absolutely sucks at handling these things. There's zero excuse for a February incident being handled in Oct/Nov midway through a season.

Don't think they fire him but they could. Maybe the Cowboys instigated it all. Can't fire him until he's well anyway. Of course that's likely soon.

In my opinion, the league takes the timing of the punishment very much into consideration in a lot of these situations. They would never admit it, but it's very obvious. I have long been an advocate for disciplinary powers being taken from the commissioner's office and being assigned to an impartial panel. There doesn't seem to be any consistency with the way punishment is meted out other than in situations that are specifically covered in the CBA.

If it doesn't happen on the football field they shouldn't be able to punish for it. Period.

I don't completely agree, but there is some logic in what you say. The problem with that logic, though, is that the league as a whole would encounter a lot of lost revenue from sponsors if players weren't punished for some acts outside of football. If the league loses money, then the players, in turn, lose money in the long run.

Well, if the legal system was capable of conducting a proper investigation, the NFL wouldn't have to conduct its own to find out what really happened.

You really think Budweiser would drop the nfl and let Coors or whoever take over their spot as official sponsor because so and so player wasn't suspended for a crime he wasn't found guilty of? No chance.

So, Randle is most likely out with his back issue. Does he try to appeal and risk missing games when healthy or just accept the punishment since he will be out anyway?

I think Randle has more problems than just his back.

Also notice that the league does not use the innocent until proven guilty standard. Every article on this states that Randle was arrested, but not charged with any crime. In other words, he has not been convicted of anything. He has not been proven of violating the law. The league essentially saying, "There's no proof he smoked pot, but we think he probably did and that's against our policy, so we're suspending him." Plus, even if it were proven he smoked it, it's not a performance-enhancing drug. It's actually the opposite.
