When it came to disgruntled Cowboys who left town after the 2008 season, Greg Ellis garnered a lot less notice than the reality TV star who shall remain nameless. Unless something changes quickly and drastically, that may not remain the case for much longer.

While the Cowboys offense seems to be approximately the same as the one that once featured Buffalo's catchless wonder, their defense is struggling mightily when it comes to rushing the passer. DeMarcus Ware has caught the brunt of the criticism for their lack of pressure, but that seems misguided when you realize that Anthony Spencer also has a goose egg under sacks on his stat sheet. Ware draws so much focus from opposing offenses that the guy on the other side has to make them pay and Spencer hasn't done that.

Spencer's lack of productivity has a lot to do with why the Cowboys have dropped from ninth to 23rd in Football Outsiders' DVOA statistic measuring defensive performance. There have been other tweaks to the unit, but the disappearance of the pass rush through the season's first two games has to be put heavily on Spencer's shoulders.

With Ware bottled up and Spencer a non-factor, it isn't hard to understand why the secondary has had their rough patches through the first three weeks. The best of defensive backs will be exposed by quarterbacks with time to throw and a defense that has to overcompensate to stop the pass leaves itself wide open against the run. When Ellis was in Dallas, offenses couldn't get comfortable against the Cowboys but there's been little fear among opponents thus far.

Ellis is gone because the team was convinced of Spencer's ability. That conviction has been shaken to the point that rookie Victor Butler was on the field during the fourth quarter of a tight game with the Panthers on Monday night. The good news is that Butler sacked Jake Delhomme twice in that fourth quarter and may be given more time at the expense of the totally ineffective Spencer going forward.

That would work well for the Cowboys personnel brain trust as it would justify both their decision to part ways with Ellis and their heretofore unremarkable 2009 draft class in one fell swoop.

To my eye, Spencer appears to move and be physically built more like an ILB than an OLB.

I call BS, Spencer has been great against the run and surprisingly good in coverage

You really think this is why Jerry drafted him in the first round and payed him all that money? The guy needs to be putting up 8-10 sacks per year. So far bust.

They are a bit harsh on Spencer, but one thing is true. He isn't producing in the pass rush. Another interesting stat is this.

Spencer has three games, 9 tackes, no sacks, no forced fumbles.

Butler in (I believe he has only played in 1 game) has 5 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not proclaiming in any way Butler is the second coming. I noted before, I think the change of pace difference between Spencer and Butler is what caused the sacks. Butler is a lot faster off the edge than Spencer. He clearly surprised the Panthers at how fast he could get off that edge.

It's not likely he can reproduce that at will, not to mention I'm scared ****less that the team may run at him. Obviously the Cowboys felt the Panthers weren't going to run the ball being behind that late in the game.

I think if we were more creative with our defense we would get more sacks.

We need more movement with the front 7.

They tried that in game 1 against the Bucs. We saw what happen there. :laugh2:

Really? I didn't see much movement.

I'm talking about occasionally blitzing Ware and Spencer inside, sending both Bradie and Brookings, dropping Rat in coverage, etc...

You know, basic stuff that the good 3-4 teams do.

Well obviously if they play him in coverage he's not going to get sacks. If he was rushing the passer on every down i might be a little more willing to call him a bust but you don't get sacks covering the TE

Has anybody wondered how great a DT Rat would be beside a 350 pound NT?

Butler has played in every game on special teams. I don't think he garnered 5 tackles on that final drive vs Carolina alone.
