LOUISIANA TECH will be the surprise school. Mark it down. We got one AP top 25 vote to start and 10 coaches poll votes. Averaging about 37 in preseason polls. We open the year on Thursday night in Shreveport against Texas A&M, then go on to play Houston, Illinois, and Virginia. If we win those four games and breeze through our conference schedule we will play for the Orange Bowl.

No mid-major has ever won three games against BCS schools in the same regular season.

Wonderful seeing some educated people realizing what Tech has this year as far as newcomers (Javon Bell and Will Smith) among many other playmakers. Don't forget Jace Amaro and Eric Ward. Seth Doege will be in some year end award conversations with those weapons. People also conveniently forget what not losing the most starters in the Big 12 to injuries last year will do for your team.

People like Mike_45 are exactly why our ignorant fan base is so divided between "Team Leach" and real Texas Tech fans.

We will surprise people this year because Tommy Tuberville actually cares about recruiting unlike his predecessor and he has also proven he can win championships at the HIGHEST level of conference, again, unlike his predecessor.

/rant over.

As much I appreciate the Dykes family and their coaching prowess, your school will not be this "first". It's incredibly delusional of you to think so.

Oklahoma and USC for the national title.

The Big 12 and SEC will be the most competitive conferences.

Barkley will win the Heisman.

Tennessee will win 8 games and be in the top 25 a few times in the year...and dare i say it Baylor will win 8 games and prove they're a much improved program for the foreseeable future.

Who is going to be the big surprise school this year?

Tennessee, that offense has the potential to light up the SEC. 2 potential 1st Round WRs and QB.

Who will matchup in the BCS Championship?

USC and Alabama

What teams wins it all?

USC

Who is going to be the big disappointment?

LSU, they took a big hit to the CB position which was a huge factor in their dominance last season. They will also miss Brockers' presence inside.

What Conference will be the best this year?

SEC

You think I'm a "Team Leach" person? How? You couldn't be further from the truth. I think Leach was good for the program at one point, he screwed up and his act wore thin, he could never win a HUGE game on the road (OU game) and we moved on.

I have zero faith in Tubberville and just don't see this team being as good as every one thinks they will be.

You can keep your rose colored glasses and rant. I'll tend to be a little more realistic.

What areas of the team most concern you?

Tech will field a markedly better defense and offense in 2012. They return their best players and the vast majority of their starts. Last season was terrible to be sure but that had a lot to do with the transition to Tuberville and injuries.

What Tech has going for it: Will Smith and Javon Bell. Arguably the two best Tech players are JC transfers and walk in impact guys. Smith has been far better than any LB on campus since Zach Thomas left. Bell is making huge plays every practice after a slow Spring. He has passed Darrin Moore who was our leading WR through week 5 last year before injury. Now Moore can't even get on the field.

Tech has the best Wr corps in NCAA. I mean that quite literally. Ward, Bell, Marquez, Torres, McRoy, Amaro... That's insane and doesnt touch on the 3 or 4 other top 100 recruits at WR positions behind them but certain to redshirt. Also doesnt include Kennard or Zoulakik that had over 100 yards receiving last year.

DL: Delvon Simmons and Leon Mackey are SEC type recruits. Mackey dominated early last year before suffering a collapsed young. He came back and played but was ineffective. Now he is healthy. Simmons is the top DL Tech has recruited in a decade. And he is making plays right now.

I am not a big fan of Tuberville but the guy did win a national championship at auburn. Last year's 5-7 tied the worst record he has ever had and he coached in the SEC for 10 seasons or so. He can recruit and he does delegate to coaches. Those coaches have to be good. I 'think' with Kaufman and Brown he has that this year. But no this is not a blind endorsement. I admit coaching is a concern until proven otherwise.

But more than that I look at other teams: OKST loses Blackmon and Weeden. Baylor loses RG3 and lots more. UT still doesnt have a QB.

I am mostly concerned with Doege and the defense. I am not sold on Doege, probably never will be, I just don't think he has it.

As far as the defense, I am not sure they could be as terrible as they were last year. I have no doubt that Will Smith and Javon Bell will be good players, but is there anyone other than them that can play to a high level? Do they have any depth at all?

I really want them to have a good season, I did graduate from Tech and I am not in the "Team Leach" thing (stupid) but I just don't see this team being as good as every one says.

There are a few cupcakes to start the schedule with, but come September 29th they start conference play. We will find out then.

If I am wrong, great I will eat crow but I am not going to get my hopes up. I have been a cowboys fan for to long for that :)

Sorry for branding you as a Leacher. I work for the Athletic Department so I'm kind of sensitive to that whole thing, we see it everyday here in Lubbock and from people we call, etc.

People don't understand how little Leach cared about the things that matter. Such as defense and recruiting. Tubs has had to deal with subpar players from the past 3 recruiting classes that Leach brought in.

When we were number 2 in the country in 2008, we should have capitalized on that and hauled in a solid recruiting class to follow in Harrell and Crabtree's footsteps. Instead, we had the 45th ranked recruiting class in the nation. Pathetic. Tubs first year? 20th. One of, if not the best Tech has ever had.

I don't fully agree wth jterrell as far as Mackey goes. He has an SEC body, but not an SEC motor. There's a reason he couldn't hack it at DE and got moved inside as an undersized DT. He isn't even starting there after being heralded as a savior of the defense.

Simmons on the other hand, will be a high round draft pick. Dude is massive, and his play backs up his size.

The offense goes without saying. You'll be amazed at what having a healthy Eric Stephens back in the backfield will do.

Dude, no worries. I have a buddy who is a big wheel in a state agency that allowed him to deal with Leach on stuff, he didn't have a lot of kind things to say about his behavior. Leach moving on was best for the program, just wish it had transpired differently.

Leachers do need to let it go, it was a long time ago. Unless you have a flux capacitor you aren't going to change it. I can't believe some people still want him back. Its like people wanting Jimmy to come back and coach the Cowboys, not going to happen.

I played under Spike at safety so wasn't a big Leach fan early on. He did win me over with his insane offensive flair and crazy go for it style. And I absolutely side with him over James. But good grief that it well past time to be over. Tubs did nothing to get Leach fired.

Team stuff.
Doege will be a stud. He was very solid last year but lost all his RB blocking protection and tailed off mightily. I have zero doubts about him. He is a senior with experience and ready to roll.

The defense will be markedly better. I mean light years.

Mackey was moved inside because they like smaller DE's with more quickness there. Mackey is technically a back up but he is a DT pass rusher. A role not unlike Montae Reagor took to the NFL.

Tech is probably middle of the pack. 4-6 in this conference. That is around 20-25 in the country. People have low expectations which is more than fair after last year but this team is far better and the conference is not as good.

TCU beat three if you count their bowl win, not sure if Boise did the same. I said regular season however, meaning teams pre-scheduled and not assigned during bowl season.

No matter how good mid-majors are, beating multiple big time schools is difficult.
