NE Screwed up Dumping Cooks

The pats always cash in their chips on guys they don't want to pay. But, its an organization that in general doesn't pay WRs. They've got Brady making stars out of guys like Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, Edelson, Danny Woodhead. The running backs like james White and Rex Burhead are also used more their pass catching ability. They have invested nothing in the WR position since Moss.

They did, but they didn't work out. Dobson(2nd), Boyce(4th).

However, I agree w/ you in principle. It's like NE just doesn't understand drafting WR's.

And they did spend picks on Hernandez and Gronk, who are basically WR's in their scheme.

I disagree with the part about Amendola. They invested money in him and he was not a star for them. He never finished in the top ten in receptions for the Pats. Julian Edleman has finished in the top ten in receptions 3 times. Wes Welker had six top ten finishes while leading the league in receptions 3 times. That is being a star. The Pats chose not to pay Welker and instead paid Amendola to replace him. He was not up to the task. I agree with you other points.

All in all, they paid him 17 million for 5 seasons. Thats about what Amari Cooper will make in 2019. Point is that its cheap and fits the way the pats operate with WRs.

They don't have a lot of patience for rookies, particularly on offense. I think they do value TE's more than WRs or at least they have shown more willingness to pay them.

That is what they ended up paying him, but initially the contract was 5 years for $31 million with $10 million guaranteed. They ended up making him redo his contract since he wasn't producing. He and his agent really had little choice but to accept a pay cut. They made the investment at first before returning to their cheap ways.

The only number that matters in regard to NFL contracts is the guarantee. The way that contract was structured made it look a lot better than it actually was.......... Amendola was never going to earn 31 million on that deal.

I thought so at the time.

No matter who you are, a QB in the NFL needs WR's. Brady had Gronk, but he's just not as effective any more due to injuries. Edelmann and White are great short receivers, but even Brady needs field stretchers.

Despite his talent, Cooks is on his third team in three years. That doesn't happen by accident.

Considering how the Pats failed to address the WR position in the off season, combined with what Cooks will make with his current deal, agreed.

They screwed the pooch. They swapped a good WR they desperately need right now for an undersized tackle (who should be a guard) who wound up on the IR...

I had Dorsett on my fantasy team when Edelman was out and before the Gordon trade. He put up decent stats, I didn’t watch the games though. What’s wrong with him?

not sure ... he hit a brick wall in the first miami game, and his targets per game just dropped...
right after that they brought gordon in... been down hill ever sense...

he just never developed as a consistent receiver for the Pats... would probably fare better in a different system

NE never makes mistakes. Just ask some of the CZ members.

Only somrone devoid of common sense can make a snarky remark that implies that an organization that has won 5 SBs in the last 20 years is worse than an organization that gas won none

Exactly. You obviously have none.

You must look at the entire story before making a snap judgment.

1st team: Saints: Very good for Saints. Saints had a plethora of quality WR's and so dumped Cooks before they had to pay him. Common NFL occurrence.
2nd team: Pats: Performed very well, and then was a salary dump.
3rd team: Rams: Tearing it up.

When you look at where and why he was traded, I'd have to conclude that your assessment using only the 3rd team thing is grossly inaccurate. Sorry dude.
