It's definitely one of those numbers we have where no one has truly claimed it as permanently theirs. If he'd gone with 41, there's the shadow of Charlie Waters. 43 will also belong to Cliff Harris for me. 40 is Bill Bates for me. 44 is Robert Newhouse. Others have worn those numbers, but they are not who I think of. The rest of the 40s (except for 48 and Daryl Johnston) could use a claim to fame.

Of course, it's likely that Neal won't be in Dallas long enough for anyone to even remember that he was with the team for a year, much less what number he wore.
