Nearly one year ago (around January 8th, if I'm not mistaken), the old Cowboys forum shut down. I just want to take the opportunity, as one of the old forum refugees, to express my gratitude for all of you on this board. This board is a lot of fun, and, funny enough, I daresay it's better than what the old board was. It was sad to lose that site, but I feel I've gained new friends here, as well as reunited with old friends from that board. So, I just want to post this thread to say thank you to you all for your hospitality. I hope to have many more fun years on this board to come, and I presume I'll probably post another one of these on the anniversary day.

I second this and also want to express thanks to Reality for waiving the rules for new members with the influx of refugees. There was some initial reaction in gen pop to the sheer number of immigrants as they didn't see us coming and neither did we. That was not unusual and I feel some would have felt the same way had the invasion been reversed. There is a certain proprietary feeling that goes with these forums.

I had been here once before when Nurse Ratched showed up at the old haunt and started busting balls but I missed my compadres too much because it is that which makes up a successful community of dysfunctional posters. Now, it is the best of both worlds, some old friends came over and new friends have been made.

I know this was an adjustment for the members here with so many coming in and I thank you for how most of you welcomed us. At first I thought some were being aholes to us but then found out they'd been being aholes to the others before so that's OK. Had nothing to do with being new.

And let me add, this forum is better than free beer from the technical aspect considering the ongoing problems on the old site.

I only have two regrets. Busting Booger's balls on the site he was paying to maintain seemed to give me a small sense of payback for the years of frustration and incompetency and not all made it over and I still miss them.

    Furboy, excellent idea and post.

I am glad you guys feel welcome here and are enjoying the site!

I've been on many forum sites over the years that shut down, switched software or were bought out and completely changed, and it's very disappointing and somewhat depressing when that happens, especially when there is very little or no warning.

For all of their irritations and personality conflicts, forum communities evolve into an extended family of sorts, especially over a long period of time, and when that is taken away from you or changes, you start to realize that you miss not only the people you liked but even the ones you did not like. You miss those back-and-forth battles, the witty retorts and even off-topic discussions where there was always something new to learn about the other members or a new topic to talk about beyond the focus of the forum.

Hopefully over time, CowboysZone will become that new family for most of the old DC forum members and the disappointment of that site shutting down will be a distant memory eventually.

Already is for me, I feel quite at home here, whether that's good or bad, I'll let y'all be the judge.

The over the edge part for me is that when I've come to recognize some of the new posters', to me, sarcasm and wit and how they might respond to a thread. That took time on the old site but when a thread would go up, I would mentally start the list in my head of how some would respond and anticipate that.

The challenge here was to learn the posters' style and see some of the feuds that had already started and get a feel for how what I do might be accepted or rejected but I also knew that had to learn about me and was I worth the trouble? At first, it was pretty much ignore but now they don't like me just fine.

The key to anything new is to back off a little and just observe, I guess that's why so many post that they've lurked for years before wading on in. This can be intimidating for some because they might react instead of respond. Can't take any of this personally and have no idea what's going on with the person on that keyboard.

I was here once before and went back because I missed the folks over there but I also didn't give this enough time for me to get used to them and vice versa. Some things gotta be earned and that takes time.

I have a lot of fun here and a lot of laughs but the magic is when a poster is in need of friends, like one going through a really rough divorce shortly after we all got here. The things we share here, and I know I've probably overstepped that on occasion, make this what it really is. I don't come here to read your posts, I come here to get to know you. There are some posters here that have taken up permanent residency in my heart and I am the richer man for that.

Buy ya wanna know what I like best here? Oh sure you do, don't be that way. I see this TL;dr here a lot less but then maybe they all just gave up. But what the hell, I don't apologize because none of it is required reading. I've just got a lot of words in my head and a limited amount of time to use them. And I am very appreciative of our host in providing a great place to use them.

    Very well said!

I agree about going to a new forum creating a lot of new learning requirements. Not only do the new users have to get used to the old users at a new site, the old users have to get used to the new users as well and sometimes those personalities struggle to mix. It's a little easier though when you can find new allies for your opinions which there is no shortage of on this site because every opinion has a lot of supporters it seems :D

It is indeed a new home for me. It's fun to be able to come onto this site and talk football with people and discuss the team that we, mostly all, share an enjoyment in following. That's what makes forums like this special. We can be ourselves and talk football with people all around the world.

I think that's a mission that's already been accomplished. There are still a few from the old site who haven't made it over, and we do miss them, but this is our home now. Thanks for putting a roof over our heads!

I agree with the sentiment Todd.

    However.

November the 18th isn't nearly (or even very close to) one year on from January 8th.
Did You start this thread early so that We could lead up gradually to a thunderous crescendo of applause and celebration?
Or is this a classic example of "Christmas Syndrome"?
