I'm trying to track down information about Dallas moving him to inside linebacker in practice before he was injured last year.

Does anyone remember that, or know where I can find info about that?

I don't remember an actual report about him being moved inside at practice. I think there was just a lot of speculation by reporters and posters about the idea.

moving him to inside i think would be a mistake now that we have ayodele to play there...no reason to move him somewhere that he wont even start

That's about what I was going to say. I don't recall ever actually seeing him there or hearing a report of him even practicing there but there was a lot of talk about maybe doing it. I seem to recall Parcells himself mentioning it not long before Burnett was injured again.

I don't see us depending on him as a starter anywhere; so far he has not proven durable enough. We have starters at the WOLB and both ILB positions; if we draft a SOLB in the first then Burnett is almost surely relegated to backup and ST duty.

As well he should be until he gets his act together. Injuries are injuries, but in football no one is born with silver spoon, top draft pick or not.

Parcells mentioned he was thinking/planning moving Burnett to ILB but didn't happen because Burnett hurt his ACL in practice just before Rams game. Don't know how healthy Burnett will be when TC opens in late July; he will be just a little over 6 months removed from injury/surgery & initially Parcells said he hoped to get Burnett back by one of the minicamps. Haven't heard anything about how his rehab is going but will certainly factor into how Cowboys draft. If we draft OLB on first day (or first round?), then we'd have Singleton, our drafted player & Burnett at OLB opposite Ware & Kalen Thornton. Seems situation might set itself up that Burnett (if healthy when TC starts) is #2 or #3 at OLB or might still be moved to ILB to compete against Oyodele for that starting job. Can't forget Kalen Thornton coming off IR; don't remember what he'd showed before injury. So I'd say there state of flux going on in our LB core involving Thornton, Burnett & even Ayodele (moving from OLB to ILB). As a result, I do expect us to keep Singleton 1 more year to provide stability & veteran leadership to our very young LBs--particularly with Dat gone.

I think he could probably do both (play inside/outside) pretty well

If we do draft a SOLB early, it might make the most sense to have Burnett be groomed to replace Bradie James, who will be an unrestricted free agent in '07.

Burnett needs to get bigger. Right now he is only around 240lbs. Even is Dallas drafts a linebacker and benchs Burnett, I will not consider him a bust. I would like the idea of having Burnett has a backup alot more than either Scott Shanlee or Ryan Fowler. You can never have too many good linebackers in the 3-4. If someone goes down next year, he should be able to step right up. By then his knee should be healed.

If I'm not mistaken they made Burnett move inside to MLB, when he was playing college ball at Tennessee, and it worked out fine and he held a favorable draft rank going into the April 2005...

Now Dallas drafted him that year and was still in the planning stages of their defensive transformation to the 3-4. They only had spots on the outside available becasue Dat N. and Bradie James occupied the middle spots. They wanted to get bigger on the outside and they had ideas of making Al Singleton play behind Burnett... The other spot was handed to Ware automatically.

Well injuries abound and Burnett didn't take Singleton's spot so Singleton wound up playing ahead of Burnett, who wound up relegated to ST duty. Singleton went down, Dat N. went down and more roster scrambling occurred... run defense sufferred and Dallas found out the hard way how valuable Singleton was. Burnett finally got in and played, got hurt, season closed on a down note again...

We'll see what happens in TC 2006. I'm pulling for him though... He's not done by a long shot.

So we'd all like to think, but if you have Ware locked up long term, Ayodele locked up long term, and a drafted SOLB locked up long term, why not let Burnett, under contract through '08 (I think) take the job if he can? It's hard to say how much money James will require.
