In a perfect world they matchup, but rarely do they matchup. What if AJ Green is still on the board and is rated much higher than other prospects on the board? Do you take him or not? Green is rated as high as any wide receiver in the last ten years. Would you be willing to pass up on the next Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson? I am of the opinion that you take the best available player regardless of position.

If we are taking Green then we need a deal to jettison one of Austin or Dez for a top-10 pick.

If Green is the best player on the board you take him and hold him ransom.

say Green is there (he won't be, I will bet my acct on that).

Say he's the pick. Do you then trade Austin for a late 1st early 2nd?

Who would do that? Not suggesting it. Just out of curiosity.

Saint louis Rams???

No, you don't take him. We've just been bullied on this forum into believing that when coaches and GMs espouse the BPA philosophy, they actually mean it. In reality, most, if not all, teams go by a 'modified BPA' philosophy. Almost every team has at least a few positions they are not going to use their first rounder on.

That's a tough one given the amount of holes on the team. But you also have to consider RW is most likely gone next year, that leaves Ogletree as our 3rd WR (Basically a starter). Would you feel comfortable with that? If you take Green then Dez, Green, Miles, and Witten would be the Greatest Show on Turf pt.2 for years

You can't do that with skill positions. It'd be one thing if we hadn't signed Miles to a huge contract and didn't draft Dez last year, but with two guys like that, you can't take another WR just like you wouldn't expect the Vikings to take Ingram with Peterson and Gerhart on the roster.

However, if you're talking a position like offensive/defensive line, secondary, linebacker then you can probably do it since you can never have too many of those guys.

I loved watching AJ Green he is a very talented kid but I would just as soon go for the top OL players in this draft and if someone wanted to move up to take Green I think I would be willing to swap 1st rd pick get the extra 2nd and start rebuilding our OL with top prospect.

That sounds like a sensible plan.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, adheres strictly to the "best player available" plan. It sounds good, and it's catchy, but it's a fantasy.

Well I believe you look to both BPA that fits a need. If you know the top OL players will be falling mid 1st rd and 2nd rd and have a chance to put yourself in the position to get the top OL players then you do it. We have some good weapons on offense but they will not reach their full potential if we can't control the offensive line.

WR is not the same as RB, especially in our offense. If you're the #3 WR you're a starter in our offense, and if we cut Roy you can add WR to our list of needs. Miles better rebound next year as well or we could have another case of paying a player too much too soon.

With that said, we'd most likely trade out in that situation because we have too many needs at more important positions.

I think this is mostly true. BPA is really a modified BPA. For the best drafting teams that means going BPA using thier own board (not some bozo's on the internet board that many of us assume must be the truth) and placing higher priority on need positions--thus improving the rank on the internal board with need in mind.

But if the disparity is anything beyond slight, you either take the true BPA player even if "non-need" or, of course, you trade down. For example, you rarely see the Steelers or the Pats taking a thruly non-need player early in the draft, they (especially the Pats) will trade out the slot and get true value.
