Well one thing is for sure, DVD by mail will eventually be taken away, as broadband saturation is so high now there is almost no point in offering the service other than to not stiff their current customers and maybe also because the full catalog isn't available on streaming but that will happen at some point.

There are multiple quality options over streaming for various connection speeds, too. I think one issue would be customers battling with their ISP bandwidth caps, but fortunately not all ISPs have these or enforce them unless they are way overboard.

I can foresee a situation where they may offer streaming online and allow the purchase of DVD and Blu-Ray over their website at huge discounted rates for their current customers until they have sold off all of their stock. Either that or they will simply stick to a model where they only offer the physical copies for purchase and not rental.

Just another stupid move by Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings...

Last year when he was in Canada launching their streaming only product, they asked him if he thought American would be ticked off because they were getting the service cheaper... His response?

In some senses that is true, but that goes for many nations. You don't always care what prices other countries are paying for a service unless it's exorbitant. At the same time, the way he worded it and taking a jab at Americans was really stupid.

The whole thing is just ridiculous. They raised prices to spot pay for content that they currently do not have the licensing rights to bc they can't afford it. So they're essentially taking out an interest free loan from millions of customers while offering nothing back in return for the raised prices, with no guarantee that they'll even secure the content for streaming. They seem to be locked up in bidding wars with competitors like Hulu for the same streaming content now.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of this. I kept the DVD option for $8 a month bc we watch a lot of foreign movies and newer movies that we miss in theatres. When I had the streaming/dvd combo option for $10, I thought that streaming content was pretty limited, and that was before they lost the Starz bidding.

He destroyed Blockbuster, and now he's looking over his shoulder paranoid that the same thing will happen to his company. Slightly neurotic decision-making as of late though

Just because something may be true doesn't mean you have to say it. He could have answered this a million other ways without insulting anyone.
