Just got this email

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $11.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs (including Blu-ray access) will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs (including Blu-ray), 1 out at-a-time (no streaming)
for $9.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $17.98 a month ($7.99 + $9.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.

We realize you have many choices for home entertainment, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-357-1516.

Seems like every email I get from them is Netflix telling me they will be charging me more money for my current services.

I used to be on the 2 DVD plan till they price hiked that a couple of months back and went to the 1 DVD and streaming plan for $13, now they are telling me that same plan will cost $18.

I guess we loyal customers will be footing the bill for Netflix' expansion into latin america and europe, go us.

I'd rather pay quite a bit more to get better streaming selection.

This is pretty much the same type of thing I have going on with T-Mobile being bought out by ATT.

They are telling me the plan I have now (with T-Mobile) isn't the same plan they offer at AT&T so I need to get a new plan that costs WAY more for the same package I have now.

I'd gladly pay a little extra for the same and to get new releases when they are actually released instead of weeks later. They also need to update their blu-ray catalog.

However, there seems to be no talk of service improvements, just price increases.

I doubt they can make you change a thing, don't take their word for it, make them prove to you where you signed a contract saying you were obligated to sign ANOTHER contract when it was put in front of you.

I haven't been closely watching Netflix, but I thought the scuttlebutt was that some of their initial contracts with studios, which were ridiculously cheap given the experimental nature of Netflix when they were entered into, were expiring and that the studios were now asking for significantly higher contracts. My understanding was that Netflix was going to have no choice but to raise prices accordingly.

The idea that you could get unlimited movies for $8 always struck me as too good to be true.

Congratulations, Netflix/movie industry. I'm going to start pirating movies again. I'm sure this is what we all wanted, right?

ugh. I guess I won't have to pay as much as I do now because I'll just choose the unlimited streaming and drop the DVDs altogether.

I completely agree. I would also like the choice of picking any movie when streaming, instead of the small "instant" selections they've picked out.

Excellent attempt to place fault on someone else when you break the law.

Just got the email myself.

For the two-dvd and unlimited streaming, it's $22.99. Might end up cancelling.

I'm leaning towards dropping their service entirely.

technology gets cheaper over time, it is up to consumers to make sure they live up to that truth.

At this point I will either cancel or pay the 23 for the 2 DVD unlimited streaming plan. They effectively made their unlimited/1 DVD plan a ripoff, and I'm sure that was no accident.

Fault is a tricky word, but they did cause it. And that is irrefutably true. I haven't pirated a single movie (and go several in theatres) since I've had Netflix. Now it's too expensive to do streaming+dvds, and movies that aren't streaming I'll probably pirate. Their loss, not mine.

If they have a problem with it, they should probably figure out how to stop me/others, or drop prices back down.

No it's not. You're stealing.

Unless you watch an insane amount of movies, for most people it will probably be much cheaper to use redbox or even blockbuster now. Blockbuster is $1 per day now.

Yeah, the selection is pretty crappy.

Too bad that's probably not going to improve.

Torrents are always nice.

It's no ones job but yours to follow the law, if you choose to pirate, the very least you could do is just admit you're cheap. :laugh2:

If you want to get technical, it's not actually stealing since the original remains. It's copyright infringement, which you're also probably doing by using that Pearson image in your avatar since I doubt you paid the photographer. ;)

Then again, that might fall under fair use, what do I know.
