New 2.5Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon CPUs

Woooo! 2.5Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon CPUs! I haven't heard anything from ARM that can compete with that. Their (ARM) roadmap says 2012/2013 for only a 1.2Ghz quad-core chip. Sounds like Apple better start porting iOS to Snapdragon because ARM (and Apple) is going to be left behind if all these is true.

Except that not anyone but us geeks care about this stuff. Until the android user experience overtakes the ios user experience and android somehow wrestles the COOL away from apple, iphone is going to continue to be the phone to beat.

Both the Apple A4 and Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC both use the same Cortex-A8 core which is based on the ARMv7 instruction set. Porting won't be too difficult. The biggest difference between the two is the GPU.

In my opinion, the iPhone has been whipped like a redheaded step-child!

The ghz of chips really is a relative rating. A 2ghz speed from one chip manufacturer can be slower than a 1ghz chip from another manufacturer. Even multi-core chips suffer from how they are configured and which applications take advantage of them.

The real problem with android honestly is the android devices look bland and blah. The OS is really great but they need someone to bring out some devices that can appeal to the masses, not just techies or low-budget buyers.

It's the same problem with laptops and monitor/computer systems like the iMac. Part of Apple's success is attributed to the styles of their devices. Using plastic, bulky, blocky and cheap looking and feeling cases gives the impression of lower quality.

I keep hoping one of the computers creating android powered devices will come up with a style that can compete or surpass that of Apple. Of course techies will chime in here and insult Apple's styles and promote several Android device styles, but if Apple was releasing MacBooks, iMacs or iPhones in cheap black or grey plastic cases, I guarantee you their sales would be less than half of what they are now. And if non-Apple companies created sexy looking devices/cases, their sales would go up considerably. That in itself shows how Apple > everyone else on styles.

Actually, I know what you mean in a way. A guy I used to work with bought a Samsung phone. (can't remember which one) It was made of a cheap plastic and felt really cheap. Not only that, the GPS accuracy stunk. People bash Google's Nexus One, but it is an extremely nice phone. It is a damn shame they didn't distributed it through the proper channels. It's sleek, has a great feel (texture), and it's weighted. Not heavy, but heavier than that Samsung phone. It feels solid.

As for style; I do like it to look nice, but that isn't most important to me. Functionality is. That, IMO is where Android is going to blow the doors off Apple.

You would think with the billions of dollars the US automakers throw around they would hire better designers too. Most US cars (not all) are damn ugly.

Yep............They're binned out before they leave the sort floor. 1's, 2's and three's. Then taken to PC's and burned in with the loading of different OS's for 24-48 hours. THEN stressed in extreme temps. 2.5 is nice.........on paper.

Here is an interesting paper (classroom paper not peer-reviewed) where a person performed some benchmarks on the Cortex-A8 processor and compared it to the Intel Atom 330. It is pointless in the context of this discussion to compare the two, but it is interesting to see some some benchmarks of the Cortex-A8 processor.

I would be a little hesitant to consider all of these results as bragging points, he (apparently) did not use optimized libraries for his floating point tests.

Does anybody know the power consumption of the 2.5GHz quadcore?
