Eagles Notes: Eagles indicate new contract for Reid
By Jeff McLane
Inquirer Staff Writer
Andy Reid could have more than his 100th regular season win coming soon. The Eagles coach might have a new contract. During an interview with Larry Kane that is to be aired tomorrow on the Comcast Network, team president Joe Banner said that he expects the Eagles to renew Reid's contract before it expires after next season.
"Yeah, I'm sure it will be," Banner said. "We have a phenomenal relationship with him. We view him as [being] in the top couple of coaches in the league."
Reid's record suggests as much. In his 11th season in Philadelphia, he is 99-63-1 with a .610 winning percentage. Only the Patriots' Bill Belichick and the Titans' Jeff Fisher have more victories among active coaches. Reid is also 10-7 in the postseason, but has a Super Bowl missing from his resume.
Banner was asked if a losing 2009 could postpone an extension.
"Andy could have a bad week, have a bad year, and that wouldn't change the fact that he's in the upper echelon of coaches in this league, and we feel lucky to have him," Banner said. "So, at whatever point, I'm sure that that issue will be resolved."
Reid has said before that he could only imagine coaching the Eagles and would wish to do so as long as the organization felt the same way. Still, he didn't have much to say when Banner's statement was brought to his attention yesterday.
"I haven't put much thought into that," Reid said. "I love the Philadelphia Eagles, but right now I am focused in on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to be very honest with you. I'm not even looking at that other thing."
Reid goes for win No. 100 tomorrow against Tampa Bay - not that he could care about the milestone.
"I try to look forward and not get caught up in all that," Reid said. "That's just not the direction that I go."
Extra points.
Reid was evasive about how much time Jeremiah Trotter will see at middle linebacker, although many defensive players said that Trotter will kick off his third stint with the Eagles as the starter. "He's playing at a high level," safety Quintin Mikell said. "He's moving around a lot better than he did when he was [cut in 2007]." . . . Reid said that Donovan McNabb will likely wear a flak jacket tomorrow to protect his fractured rib. The coach said he liked what he saw this week out of his quarterback, who is back after missing the last two games. "I thought he had the velocity, that's where you'd start, velocity and accuracy, after an injury like that," Reid said . . .
Even though he isn't on the injury list, DeSean Jackson said that his groin isn't completely healed. "Got to play with it, though," the receiver said. . . . Sheldon Brown had a note taped to the chair at his locker stall yesterday that informed him he must provide a urine sample for drug testing. One line was highlighted: "If you feel you are not prepared to provide an adequate specimen you must still check-in with the collector." Brown said he was prepared and did provide an adequate specimen.
