So Stephen Jones discussed how our new defense will use a SAM/DPR, which explains why we have so much interest in LBs in this draft.
This was shared from a Mike Nolan defense from a few years ago.

There was some discussion that if we drafted Murray than Smith becomes our SAM/DPR or if we draft Chaisson that he is our SAM/DPR, you can also imagine guys like YGM, Weaver, or Baun playing there. Also, of course, Gregory.

It also makes sense why they are holding on to Crawford, if we see a lot of this alignment. I can see it going:
Chaisson/Gregory/etc.- Crawford - Poe-McCoy-DLaw as the other four. OR - to create mismatches you put DLaw next to the SAM/DPR and then create major headaches on that side. With his size, I can also imagine Aldon Smith playing with his hand on the ground and taking Crawford out of his spot.

Then, when we go nickel - you take out either Poe or Crawford and put in our 3rd corner.

I am kind of excited about the possibilities.

Every defense has holes. What I like is when teams change the types of fronts used and schemes to really take advantage of opponents weakness and mitigate the defenses weakness. NE does this. My concern here is being careful not to expose the DB's as we are weaker than last year.

I haven't read anywhere that the Cowboys are interested so much in LB's in this draft.

Usually that means we need pressure. The Cowboys have devolved at both positions with the loss of Quinn and Jones. It's going to be very tough to disguise a defense to make up for that. Weak at DB and pass rush is usually a recipe for one of the worst defenses in the league.

Modern NFL defenses are evolving, as they should. Offenses always have the inherent advantage of being able to dictate the play, and the NFL rules are certainly structured to favor offense.

Today’s pass happy game has created a premium for defensive schemes that are flexible. LBs especially must be able to flex between being able to stop the run, handle pass coverage on multiple types and sizes of players, and in some cases even be good pass rushers.

Whatever is happening here with scheme, I just hope Mike Nolan is more aggressive than his predecessor. The Cowboys defense of the last 5-7 years was the easiest defense to read and was as predictable as a Texas summer. I’m hoping that changes this year.

I will be honest. I am a teacher and I am using my breaks to follow the DC writers. A little too much.

The supposed LB fascination has been shared by guys like Bobby Belt and Broddaus. If it is off-ball, I am hoping it comes later in the draft. A lot of the Edge guys we are looking at are also OLD/DE types, which I would be in favor of drafting early.

Very true but i think we are good at LB with or without LVE (better with him). I'm all for sending a 5th guy, or have him line up on the line and then drop in coverage or whatever we need to do to buy an extra half second so someone can create pressure.

I believe they are assembling the type of personnel where they can do both the 4-3 and the 3-4 and mix it up and confuse all over the place.

Nolan's scheme, like all others required great players. It is a higher pressure, higher risk scheme. If you don't have the players you need for that scheme you are going to get steam rolled.

What I like about the new staff, so far at least, is that they seem willing to collect talent and then scheme with the talent, instead of trying to fit talent into an old scheme.

Considering that we spent a #2 and #1 just recently at DL, we should be good there, but of course, they were Rod specials. I think if we had this staff in the Taco draft, we would have TJ Watt and last year we would have picked up a nice safety and we would be much better off as a defense right now.

I dont know that Jaylon can handle a change in responsibility AND his sunglasses line.

That may be asking a bit much and the team is just gonna need to understand.

Hahaha. Yea. I am much more in favor of drafting a college 3-4 OLB like Chaisson or Baun and just let Smith stay where he is.

Any fool that passes on a great football player because he doesn't fit the scheme should be fired immediately.

Hopefully our front 6 or 7 are good enough. I think we were last year but used a vanilla D all season. Like CowboyRoy said, we need the players to make it work. Remember Rob Ryan? He did not have the personnel. Remember Buddy Ryan? Yeah, it was all fun and games with the '85 Bears and that 90s Oiler team. Not so much with the Cardinals. They just made fools of themselves.

I also expect Smith to have a much better year as a traditional off-ball backer with the new scheme and with the beef in front of him.

Know what?

ANYTHING feels great after "line up and beat your man."

What a disgusting waste of a decade.
