I think a lot of people will say that I'm way ahead of myself, but most people know that I am pretty fair and balanced (fox news lol), but I just have this feeling, that we have really started to turn the corner. The excitement for this team reminds me of the 2007 and 2009 teams, but even in those years I was screaming about deficiencies.
The only thing I think that we're behind on is offensive line.
I think this offensive line can only get better as the season goes, and I think our defense which is already a top 5 defense in this league (list them if you think there are better defenses), can only get better. I'm not sure if Bruce Carter can help us this year, but I'm not just going to rule him out. Am I saying he will become a starter? No, but I think we can work him in on some snaps on some sub packages.
I think we all assumed this defense would have more growing pains than it did, just because of the circumstances. While I'm not going to berate him if he doesn't have a pro bowl effect on defense right away, I'm not going to say he won't be able to contribute either.
This defense had talent and we saw it in 2009. Both corners made the pro bowl, and that's because defense is a multi facet approach. Our defense is playing even better than it did in 2009. The points per game doesn't reflect it, but I think it will. Much of our PPG has been skewed by offensive mistakes (of which we didn't have many in 2009, Romo had 8 or 9 interceptions for the year).
It's really up to this offense to step up and be 2 dimensional. I think as the season goes on and the offense line improves, and the running game establishes itself we're going to "just win baby win."
I maintained this point against the Patriots. If the offense/special teams unit can score 2 passing touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, and one field goal per game, with no more than 1 turnover, we will win every game. That's 24 points. I do not believe this defense will give up more than 24 points in a game without the offense or the special teams units putting them in bad positions.
That said I expect this offense to score more than that if they execute like they can.
I think this team can win a super bowl this year, and next year I believe that we will improve this offensive line, add some help to the secondary, we'll have bruce carter in a better position, possibly as a starter, and woicik will work his magic in making this team stronger. Woicik will help make our offensive linemen studs, not to mention help improve Dez and Miles who are already pretty strong guys.
If our biggest holes are at left guard and center... I think we're more than on our way.
Again consider this is essentially the same team as we had in 2009 just under better management with a new offensive line (OL got us killed against the Vikings). Same team beat the saints IN New Orleans when they were undefeated... I desperately wanted an offensive overhaul. And while I got what I wanted, I really wanted more veteran players, but we'll see how it takes us.
In fact now we have Dez Bryant instead of Roy Williams... I think our running back situation is improved, especially if we replace Choice with Tanner.
Our kicking situation is improved.
If the draft/free agency were tomorrow, how many positions would you scream "WE NEED TO FIX THIS NOW" for? Guard? Yes. Center? Maybe? Anywhere else? Maybe get a cornerback to replace Newman in the future... But honestly are our corners a huge problem right now? They're playing just as well as they did in 2009 if not better. I think we got off to a slow start because of injuries, but we've improved since then.
Easy schedule gets us to the playoffs, improved offensive line and offensive consistency determines if we go to the super bowl.
Next year it's just staying healthy, and patching the team up.
Romo is young enough for this team to be a dominant force for years to come. I'm pretty excited when you consider how young the team really is. Anywhere there is significant age, there is almost already a push for youth, or at least places where you can patch work for coming years.
