New football helmets no better than leather:


(Reuters) - Modern football helmets are no more effective in protecting high school and college players from injury than the leather helmets used nearly 100 years ago, according to a new study by the Cleveland Clinic.

im not sure i believe this but smarter people than me have apparently studied it. time for a new design ?

that is because rest of equipment is also better, players are stronger, faster and bigger too

The NFL doesn't encourage innovation, they stifle it.

Marcellus Wiley had a hell of a radio piece some time back where he basically said that small companies with better products stood no chance of getting their equipment on the field because they couldn't pay enough to get the NFL to adopt it.

The guy was a rep for player safety and basically was in shock at some of the stuff he saw.

I don't buy it fully. Sure what you said probably does occur, but that doesn't mean there also hasn't been improvement in the helmets. You can have both things happening at the same time. What it means is that helmets aren't as good as they potentially could be because of the costs to the smaller companies, but they are still better than the old leather helmets.
