Free did get turned but he was engaged by two players 51 and 57. I'm not going to say that it wasn't a bad play on Free's part but the inline view is much more representative of what went on than that one.

You really don't like Free, xwalker, but he is a Cowboy. I don't get it.

It was Tyron that let the blocker into the backfield. Free getting pushed back might or might not have be a factor.

I was just impressed with Watson (6-2, 240) pushing back Free (6-6, 325). The Cowboys really need to improve on Special Teams.

I don't hate Free. I've said many times that he is "good enough". I just like his backup better; although, Parnell also had a wacky block on a kick by Bailey a few weeks ago where the defender rolled into Bailey's leg. It's odd that they would have blocking issues on kicks because they are using the starting OLine plus Parnell and Witten as the blockers.

If anything the guy is a work out warrior, he even ran a 4.4 in the 40, hopefully he helps on special teams, what he was brought here to do and give that unit the spark with a big hit flying down on kicks!

All of this is a coaching problem. If there is ways for the other team to start blocking field goals you have to wonder why isn't this taken cared of? Heck, they could have taken a time out and work on the blocking issues but the Cowboys are content with how things are going on special teams.

I sometimes wonder if XWalker's last name is Parnell. :D

X is definitely one of the better posters here. He is like a dog with a bone on this one subject though.

I probably have similar things that I have too, so I can't say too much.

You really don't like Free, xwalker, but he is a Cowboy. I don't get it.

I think he us right on the player's performance. I do think he undervalues leadership and communication. We had major breakdowns with Free out. That's a big part of his value

The reason I make a big deal about Parnell/Free is not really just about these specific players, but it's because it's an example of how the majority of fans judge players more by what the media says or doesn't say and by the overall team results and often don't really watch players in detail, especially OLinemen. Fans/media also judge a player based on a timeline. They basically believe that if a player has been around more than a couple of years and is not a starter, then he automatically sucks and the team should replace him. Parnell is unique in that the Cowboys basically built a player from the ground up. He had zero experience playing OLine and very minimal experience with anything related to football. You can't use the same rule of thumb on a timeline in regards to this type of player.

I said repeatedly last season that Leary was playing really well, especially as the season progressed. The majority of fans just didn't believe it because the media was not hyping him. Even in the middle of training camp many were saying that Bern was better. Once Leary won the job over Bern the media started giving him praise and suddenly the fans love him. I was a fan of Leary from the very beginning. I thought he had NFL physical ability from the very beginning which was something that guys like Arkin never had. Leary just needed time to develop.

In 2012 I defended Bern. I said that he played well in the 1 or 2 games where he appeared to be reasonably healthy. I thought he had a chance to be a decent starter if he could ever get healthy. He did become a decent started in 2013.

This off-season when people were projecting the 53, many said that Durant was not good enough to make the team. I went back and reviewed him from the previous season and posted a review saying that he was actually a decent NFL player and would likely be above Carter on the depth chart. Once the media started praising Durant, then the fans started flipping their opinions.

I defended the draft pick Hitchens right after the draft. I reviewed him fairly extensively and really liked what I saw. Many fans bought the negative hype that he would have been available later just like they bought that line with Fred the year before. Once the media started praising Hitchens, suddenly he's the greatest thing since sliced bread in the minds of many fans now.

I was a big fan of Josh Brent a few years ago before most of the media even knew his name. I thought he was that powerful big-body that the Cowboys never really had in their years of running the 3-4 defense.

I guess the reason I keep pushing the Parnell/Free issue is because the media just can't see that Parnell is at a minimum a really good backup OT. Yes, maybe the overall OLine didn't play as well with Free out, but Parnell played better than many starting OTs that the Cowboys had in some years past. What was the name of that idiot RT that had the holding call that negated a TD back during Wades time frame? There was Rob Petitie, Jacob Rogers, etc. that the Cowboys attempted to use at RT in year gone by.

When it comes to non-skill position players, most of the local media now just parrot whatever Bryan Broaddus says. If Broaddus has not told the local media that Parnell was a really good backup, then they are not going to come to that conclusion by themselves. They have to spend all of their efforts talking about Dez and the contract or other stuff that appeals to the casual fan. Then if the local media is not telling the majority of fans what to believe, then just like the media, the fans can't really figure it out for themselves.

Yes, Free does irritate me to some extent because I think he should be better. He has the top 2 things that you look for in an OT with excellent quickness and really good size. Normally, I expect a guy with his type of quickness combined with his size to eventually be a near dominant player, but he just has not developed the power to become an elite player. I just can't figure out how a guy with his size can't develop more power after all of these years. Does he just not spend enough time in the weight room or does he have some type of shoulder problems that just limit his ability to ever lift heavy? Parnell came to the Cowboys as an ex-basketball player that weighed somewhere around 270 or 280 and now he is stronger than Free. I just don't know how that happens.

I'm certain that either Free or Parnell will be gone next season and I'll have to find another underrated player to be my pet cat. ;) The early favorite is Ken Bishop since he was my #2 pet cat in the draft long before the Cowboys drafted him. I need to start reviewing Watson now to see if he has pet cat potential. The OTs Weems and Hawkins are possibilities.

Sadly, the only media guy (if you want to call him that) that I've heard praise Parnell is Jesse Holley. Apparently, some players or maybe just one player told Holley that they think Parnell is better and definitely much stronger than Free. Yes, the opinion of Holly is not much to hang my hat on, but he probably does have some insight to the opinion of players on the team.

Don't understand why the Jaguars cut this guy. Maybe that's one of the reasons they suck. Letting good talent get away.

It is really odd. They owe him significant guaranteed money and it's hard to imagine that their 53rd best player is better than Watson.

Take this for what it's what it's worth but an NCO I work with here a BAF is a HUUUUUGE Jaguars Homer and last week (before we played the Jags) he was talking about how Watson had been playing like garbage all year.

That says a lot right there. The bigtime fans (like most of us) tend to know if a free agent is playing well or not.

Still, he could be a big disappointment for a team that signed him to a pretty big free agent contract and still be a good pickup for cheap off the unemployment line. I'll hope for that.

He probably has been playing poorly; otherwise, they wouldn't have cut him. He had surgery on both groins prior to the season and he's had a hamstring issue. Also, the way they used him at LB is probably not how the Cowboys would use him if he played LB here. They seemed to have him up trying to rush the passer often which seemed odd to me.

I think the Cowboys primary reason for signing him was not his ability at LB but his ability on Special Teams. It appeared that he was playing well on ST.

That's not entirely Smith's fault. Watch both sides of the line: Everybody's legs kick inside to help cover the gap inside them and anchor, elbows out too (part of the reason Free got blown up); they're blocking space/forming a wall, not individuals. The reason the kick is blocked is because Free gets blown back at first contact creating a gap that shouldn't be there, offering no help to the gap inside of him. The reason Free got blown up is his anchor step, it's like he's pass blocking there with 2012 technique, he's got no anchor and nothing protecting his chest.

If Free dips down to fill the gap, Watson goes straight to the kick because Witten was trying to keep the two outside rushers from making a straight beeline to the kicker by at least being in their path. The fact that Smith whiffs on the one player he is attempting to slow puts Free in an unwinable situation. Then the fact that Watson got under Free doesn't even leave him with the opportunity to attempt to block two players.
If we look at the other side of the line, we see how it is supposed to work. Parnell and Leary both take on their individual assignments at the snap, make the initial stop and then form a wall.

If Smith had done his job, we wouldn't even be discussing a blocked kick because Clemons wouldn't have gotten there. I would prefer that Free not get knocked back on the play, but he is not the reason that kick was blocked.

They released him to activate Aaron Colvin who is a nice young CB prospect.
The Jags need players who can help on the base offense or defense badly.
And CB is a monster need.

Watson is a VERY good special teamer tho and we got lucky grabbing him.
He just won't help much anywhere else.

If that's all he can do, than it's a good move because Dallas has been very mediocre on kick coverage this season.

Oh yea, great fit for us. We've been burning that spot of far inferior ST guys. Merely noting Jags have bigger problems, lol.

And it showed a lot during the game. He was pushed into the backfield in pass block protection. It seems he can't recover from his first step which is awkward, IMO.

You're not saying that Free did his job, are you? Because that's exactly what he did. The guy he's blocking didn't get close to the kick, while the guy Smith was blocking went right around him.

Sometimes ugly ain't a bad thing.
True. But no 320lb man should get ragdolled like that by a guy who is only 240.

Nah, he would have to stumble through Free's arm/Witten's leg and turn at more of an angle than #91 did. Their elbows are flared out so they can catch people trying to run the gaps like what you describe, and everyone should be stepping back inside to anchor better vs bull rushes and help the inside gap. I'd prefer teams try that over what happened, there's a reason it's designed to not allow stuff come free up the middle; it takes longer to get there the further out you go.

In fact, I've seen other kick attempts where Free truly does get tripled (two gaps around him and bull rushed), but he gets his anchor step and it doesn't matter what they do because it's a wall. I've also seen him singled up and thrown airborne, but they rushed the other side of the line so it didn't matter.

In the example you've posted here, Smith blocks the man on his right shoulder, which clogs up the play. Free is actually pushed back slightly here (but by two men), but more to the inside, which does form the wall.

I do not know why Smith moved to the inside against the Jaguars, other than the fact that Bernadeau caved in, but that action opened up the lane, as it would have if he did the same thing in the above clip. Free would have been in better position to slow down the rusher here if he'd gotten around Smith, but if Smith had whiffed, the result would have possibly been the same as in the Jaguars game.

I guess the most we can conclude was that it was a domino effect of circumstances, but either the fact that Smith whiffed on his man, or Bernadeau had to overplay his, caused the other pieces to fall.

Leverage is a big part of the game. There are always going to be instances where a smaller man knocks over a bigger one by getting lower. It isn't just Free that that happens to, even if xwalker likes to point out when it does happen to him.

Yes it happens.

Doesn't mean it should. It's not like Watson was a blitzer with a full head of steam that Free saw late or anything. He just whooped him off the ball. That's bad.

I agree he should have handled it better, but it really shouldn't have made a difference if Smith had not been whipped off the snap by Clemons.

Free is not a pretty player and when he doesn't get his technique right, he loses the initial battle if not completely. But for the most part he gets the job done and at times, he does it really well.

I've never been opposed to upgrading his spot, just to isolating his bad plays in order to make him look like he is the same awful player he was two years ago, when he did deserve to be replaced.
