LAS CRUCES, N.M. —A Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy has been charged in the murder of a fellow deputy.

Police said Jeremy Martin, 29, was shot and killed overnight in a Las Cruces hotel.

Martin and Tai Chan, 27, were staying the night at Hotel Encanto after extraditing a prisoner to Stafford, Arizona. Las Cruces police said the two visited a Dublin’s Street Pub Monday night, where they had an argument.

Police said they believe the deputies were drinking.

The two returned to the hotel around midnight. Police said the argument between the two escalated and Chan fired several gunshots at Martin. Martin was attempting to flee to an elevator at the time he was shot, according to police.

Police said Martin was shot several times in the back. Witnesses said they heard at least six shots.

What was the trigger that set off this tragedy? You are drinking with your fellow deputy or you are having a drink alone while sitting with your fellow deputy. Alcohol may have played a role, but I doubt Chan had fallen into some alcohol fueled rage and started spontaneously shooting only at Martin. Post-traumatic stress syndrome maybe? Perhaps Martin knew something about Chan which Chan did not want him to reveal to the world. It reads like an extremely angry event. Six shots? While Martin was running away??

It sounds like an episode of The Shield.

Don't say that 5Stars. The Law Enforcement issues are a mess but it's still a good place.

You're right...but, damn, bro! What is in the hell is wrong with Law Enforcement now days. It seems like every few weeks there is something about the police doing something that makes the news.

I know. Been saying it for awhile now. Law Enforcement here has been allowed to role to easy with no real oversight and it's not a recent thing. It's been this way since I was a kid. The difference is that before, Law Enforcement may have been walking the line but they were generally doing so in the best interests of the people. Now, it's not about that a lot of times. Now, it's about other things and it's not good.

What do you think it's all about? I mean, is it the pressure of the job, a political thing, bad training, gangs, drugs....?

Growing up in the North Valley there was never this kind of mess.

I can't really talk about it on this forum because it involves politics but I can PM you if you want to discuss further. Sorry Brother.

Let me know in a PM, because if it is political, I would really like to know what it is all about.

My nephew lives in Rio Rancho and is in to politics very much. You might even know him and you might not like him or you might like him. His name is Todd Hathorne. Have you ever heard of him?

No, his name is Hathorne, same as mine. However, when I went into the Military they spelled all my paper work with a "w" in it and it was to late to change the name because there were no computers at that time, so my name is Hawthorne, but I was born under Hathorne. Navajo Indian.

Welcome to the suck HAWTHORNE!

I have lived with that name since I joined the Military. All my relatives say that I am the only one with the "w" in my last name and that is why I became so successful! lol
