I was listening to 980 AM Sports radio (Fort Washington, Maryland area listening audience), and they were talking about the new NFL rules - just wanted to get your take on some of the changes ...

- Defensive players who are knock down on the ground cannot lurch out and tackle Quarterbacks while they are on the ground (this change apparently was brought about by a 2008 regular season injury to a quarterback in that situation)

_The initial force of a blindside block can't be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent's head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty.

_Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty."Our clear movement is to getting out of the striking in the head area," Pereira said. "We're reading about injuries that say spinal and vertebrae. We've got to try something."

_On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. A 15-yard penalty will go to a violating team.

_Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. It will be a 5-yard penalty.

What's your opinion Dave ...

A no-lurching rule? I think this one is crazy. I can see not allowing tripping or leg whipping, but no tackling if you are on the ground? Seems silly to me.

_The initial force of a blindside block can't be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent's head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty.

It is more humane.

I gotta say, though, I miss the roughness and toughness of the game that I used to watch maybe 15 years ago and before.

_Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty."Our clear movement is to getting out of the striking in the head area," Pereira said. "We're reading about injuries that say spinal and vertebrae. We've got to try something."

Same as above.

... I don't have a problem with protecting players, really, it is a good thing.

But if they are going to take away the more brutal forms of contact, I wish they'd allow more contact between DBs and WRs and not be so ticky with the general pass interference fouls.

If you systematically disallow contact, you place more emphasis on timing, .... and you end up with something that begins to resemble synchronized swimming.

I'm not a big fan of synchronized swimming.

_On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. A 15-yard penalty will go to a violating team.

Great. More technical rules that won't be obvious to fans in the stands and that will be inconsistently enforced ....

_Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. It will be a 5-yard penalty.

Is there a problem that they are trying to fix with this?

Are too many onsides kicks being recovered?

Gentlemen, there's not going to be too much anyone can do about the new rules. So I guess we're all going to have to live with them.

In defense of some rules, the Zebras stripes are enforcing the rules; however, they do miss a lot of penalty calls also. One of the rules I'm glad they enforce if the face-guard rules; one unintentional (5-yard penalty) and the other is the aggregious type (15 yard penalty).

This is one of those rules that you obviously see; especially awhen the players body is moving in one direction and his head is looking in a different direction.

Let's see what happens.
