It wasn't that they couldn't get generators in. The got some in real quickly. The plant was so old that the connectors were no longer compatible.

The older generation of nuclear power plants are only so so. The newer ones seem to have dealt with a lot of the problems though.

BS. Why could not they jury rig something? Sorry that excuse does not wash.

There were electrical pumps. You are telling me that those pumps supposedly had such a weird electrical voltage that they could not figure something out?

BS

From the Wikipedia on it: "Attempts to connect portable generating equipment to power water pumps were eventually discontinued after numerous attempts, as the connection point in the Turbine Hall basement was flooded and because of difficulties finding suitable cables."

I was following this as it happened, and it was reported at the time as well. The connectors available did not match up. Engineers do not have magic wands that immediately fix all problems, and we are not talking about adapting a three prong plug to two prong. They were worried about the amount of radiation and were limiting the amount of time that people could work in the area as well.

Reading reports on this disaster now shows that a whole cascade of errors over the life of the reactor had contributing effects.

then you cut out the connectors and splice the wires together if you have to.

Something about this sounds off.

Were they so inflexible that the idea of just doing that was not something they thought of; or were they so tied to their SOP's that since that sort of thing was not mentioned they did not do that?

Good god. They only had to keep the pumps going for a couple hours at a time. Just enough to keep the temperatures low enough to prevent damage.

It's always easier to do when you are sitting in your chair, safely away from the actual situation.

The mismatch was a major screw up, as were a number of issues where the controlling company made major errors. Of course the reactor was supposed to be offline soon, and was gearing down for shutdown not that far past the Earthquake/Tsunami.

Generally, every nuclear incident that I am aware of has been ascrible to human error, either in design or management.

Deaths due to Chernobyl? Ratio of cancer rate increase from gas refining to radiation leaks?

Disingenuous.

Ah yes I remember some wacko claims about 1 million dead would happen because of Chernobyl.
