New practice squad rules

the 2020 amendment due to dealing with the global pandemic expanded the practice squad number to 16 for the season.

Thanks to Covid, NFL teams 16-man practice squads can now have up to six players with an unlimited amount of accrued seasons. In the past, only players eligible for the practice squad (based on years accrued in the NFL and the number of years on an NFL practice squad each season) could be signed. But due to dealing with COVID-19, teams can keep almost half of the practice squad with players who would normally have had to make the active roster or else be out of a job.

NFL practice squad’s have yet another adjustment thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Every Tuesday, each NFL team (assuming they have a game the upcoming week) can protect up to four players on the practice squad to where they cannot be signed by another team until the following week. What seems odd to me is the way baseball handled things.

They have a 30 player reserve pool but the second only one player tests positive, they start banging games.

Interested to see how the NFL replaces players instead.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew they were expanding to 12. And then it was increased to 16.
Dallas and I think 3 or 5 other teams get an exception of an extra PS player also. Theses players are from Mexico, so Alcorn will be 17.

Good to know, as I did not know, about 6 can have accumulated NFL seasons. This could be players like Goodwin, may be kept if not calmed from waivers, if he does not make the 53.
Others, Joe Jackson, March if he is beat out by Bernard. Same for Noah Brown if he does not make the 53, and is not claimed or Wilson, Smith, Bryant, any of the WR's that would be #6 or #7 on the depth chart.

I'm surprised its only 16 players. I bet the well managed teams will have 16 on the PS and then every other person that was on the 80 man roster on speed dial just in case

But these new rules allow you to put them on ps and then you can designate two that you can activate on game day. At least that is what they've been talking about since the beginning of the offseason.

I not sure, but I believe you could do that three times before you have to add them to the 53.

Allows you to protect guys like Anae or Robinson who have plenty of upside but either might not be ready, or just lose out on the numbers game. Could see one of Biadasz or McGovern in that group too.

At the start of the new league year in March until the start of the first league week of the regular season, the NFL teams operate under the “Top 51” rule for salary cap calculations. During the offseason and training camp, NFL teams can maintain a roster of up to 90 active players. Due to the Top 51 rule the teams do not need to account for all 90 players to fit under the team’s adjusted salary cap. So which contracts are used for this calculation? Simply put…the Top 51 contracts based on value; along with other items. Rank the salary cap charges for each player in descending order, add up the highest 51 ranked charges.

This is the part that sucks. They are doing a good thing with all of the changes. Then limit it to two times per players. I can see it to a degree. But seems to limited. Maybe 4 times before you either leave them on the 53, or leave them on the PS. Unless they can somehow use the IR to have more than 2 that can return in conjunction.

At least for this season, but sure would be nice if permanent. It would help in player development as well, be a round about way to expand the rosters, without compromising the game day limited roster.

Agreed. I think roster expansion, in one way or another, has been a long time coming. The expanded practice squad is a fair enough way to go about it.

Agree, although I'd rather protect Dinucci on the practice squad and have Anae or any other special-teamer on the 53. This also makes me believe we'll be keeping not just 2 QBs on the 53, but also 2 RBs.

Does anyone know the answer? Because if we have to cut players before signing them to the practice squad it may change the thinking about who to stash there. I think guys like Anae and DiNucci probably won't clear waivers.
