New stadium questions

Hey guys,

Just a few questions about the playing environment at the new stadium.

Does the field on the new stadium have the high crown like Texas stadium or is it more in line with the rest of the NFL fields? Does it have real grass and slide outside like the Cardinals stadium, or is it some form of turf? Is it oriented in such a way that the sun won't get in the players eyes when the roof is open?

What other things about the playing field itself will be dramatically different from Texas Stadium that could impact play?

Thanks,

Rick

I dont think anyone knows the crown issue yet but the concrete looks flat. We'll have fake turf again in the new stadium. We have the same roof as the old stadium so there will be a weird sun issue when the stadium roof is open.

You are not going to believe this, but while reading the Tony Romo chat thread, I wondered this exact same thing because the field is not down yet.

Maybe you know...but is Texas Stadium crown built into the concrete or is it a layering issue under the carpet? I'm thinking its the concrete since that makes the most sense. The new stadium looks pretty flat.

the stadium playing surface is fifty feet under ground, it will be field turf and there will be three playing surfaces, a soccer field, a NCAA college field and a NFL field. Depending on the event, one field will be removed and replaced with another field for that particular event...I would of like a real grass surface too, but with the stadium floor fifty feet under ground, that option was out the window, so to speak

Good question. I honestly do not know.

yes the crown is built into the concrete at texas stadium to allow water to run off. The new stadium is pretty flat but it does have a dranaige system

The crown was definitely the concrete below. When I played there in the early 90's that had to be the thinnest turf we played on all year. With the old astroturf, the field had to be crowned for drainage.

I beleieve the stadium is the same orientation as the old, so yes the sun / shadows will be the same.
And is the same turf grass, or whatever the name of it is.

I hope it is flat, or very slight crown. Unless Brett Favre is playing, then have a flexible crown, so it can be adjusted for him. :lmao2:

With as quickly as they can close the roof, I'd imagine that drainage shouldn't be much of an issue. Won't they just close the roof if there's precipitation in the forecast?

I keep wondering if the large HD screens will cast some kind of weird shadow on the field when the roof is open.

Thanks for the first hand reply to the question.

Interesting....because that's when this question occured to me. I think it was his statement about not having played there yet that brought it to mind.

Even though the stadium is oriented the same way, I'm wondering if the fact that the field is below ground level may keep the sun from being an issue for the players?

One question I have is how many total TVs are in the new stadium? I have read somewhere before that there are over 3000 TVs in the new stadium.

Here is a link I found with their Cisco systems partnership...

Seems like the sun would shine the same.

My thought is that if the distance between the roof and the field is greater than Texas Stadium then perhaps the shadow cast by the roof opening will cover the field, except for the times when the sun is directly overhead. The sun isn't an issue when it's high in the sky but I remember setting in the north endzone at the old stadium and the sun shining in my eyes as the afternoon progressed. I think it was a problem for the players too.

I'm sure it's not perfect, but those preview videos of Madden '10 might give you an idea of what it's gonna look like.

If the original crown was a mistake, I don't see why they'd try to replicate it. Aside from Phil Simms, few visiting teams/QBs have cited it as a competitive disadvantage.

Wasn't the crown in Texas Stadium brought down several years ago? I thought that they lowered the crown when they switched from the old Astroturf to the new FieldTurf. I seem to recall reading that somewhere around that time period.
