New tires issue

I thought I'd fly this by you guys and see what you thought.

I just got new tires a few weeks ago for my car from Sam's Club. We've gone there for tires before and never had a problem.

This time, the day they put them on I could tell they weren't balanced well because the steering wheel started to shake when I got above 60mph.

I went back and they re-balanced them, saying that they just found out the balancing machine had been malfunctioning.

After I left from having them re-balanced, it seemed better, but again, it was still shaking.

I went back the third time and they told me the glue that holds on the weights had apparently not set, and the weights had fallen off.

This time, the steering wheel isn't shaking, but I feel like the car is bouncy, for lack of a better term. It's like I put a quarter in the machine and the Magic Fingers are going under my car. No matter what road I'm on, it gets bouncy at around 60mph.

My car is a 2009 and it rode as smooth as a baby's butt prior to getting these tires, so I am positive that there are no issues with the wheel bearings or suspension.

It's still a balance issue or something with the tires themselves, I think.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I think you need to go back and ask them to start over. Take those tires off and put new on and make them show you the old tires off.

One mistake is understandable if the machine was off. It has gone too far now and you have a child to worry about.

this

I would also suggest you go to another place to have them aligned as it may be off now.

What tires did you get? If they're Goodyear, get a different brand, Michelin or Bridgestone.

Let me explain something. Unbalanced and mis-aligned tires can wear in ways that make them unsafe. If you are still having issues with these tires they are not safe.

First off, if you ever have that shaking feeling, pull over as soon as possible and check that the lug nuts are tight on all 4 wheels. If you don't have the tools on you, pull into the nearest tire shop/brake shop/garage and have them check it out for you. Anytime the wheels are taken off a car, there's always the risk of loose lug nuts.

As for the bouncy feeleing, you should check the air pressure in all 4 tires and see if it matches the air pressure recommendation sticker located on the inside of your door. (Different cars have the sticker on different doors, but one of them will have that sticker on it, or on the frame of the door.)
Tires are the only point of contact that your car has with the road, so small changes, such as tire pressure, will make a huge impact on the way the vehicle feels.

One more tip......get yourself "a guy"......a local, privately owned garage, where the guys know what they're doing and they actually depend on their customers for making their living and feeding their family. They take your vehicle and your safety a lot more seriously than most Sam's Club or Walmart garage guys/girls.

Good luck, and let me know how you make out.

How did you arrive at this conclusion?

True, poor alignment will cause a tire to wear uneven and cause a shaking/bouncing sensation at certain mph, but do you think his car just fell out of alignment during the tire change? I guess it's possible, but I was under the impression that the car was riding fine, then he got the tires changed and it all went to crap.

They are Goodyear, but they didn't have any others that fit my car. They are the same brand/style that the car came with when we bought it, so I really don't have any issue with that.

Next time I need tires, I'm taking it somewhere else. Even if it's just the Sam's Club we regularly go to.

I'm so frustrated with all of this because it always takes a ridiculously long time when I have to go there. They don't do appointments, only first come first serve. We got there 10 minutes after they opened on Sunday and there were 6 people ahead of us already.

I just asked my boss if I could take off a half day on Wednesday so I can go back while our daughter is in school. Waiting doesn't bother me so much, but with her it can be a nightmare. Hopefully it won't be as busy on a Wednesday morning, either.

Also, I don't think there is an issue with the alignment, either. It doesn't have any pull to it.

Maybe it's me, but I wouldn't trust my car to anyplace like that. Not even putting on tires. I learned this lesson the very hard way. I don't go to the dealer, because I'm fortunate to have a great mechanic, but I understand they're rare. It's not easy finding an honest mechanic, so if all else fails, just bring it to the dealer and avoid the headache. They'll cost more, but they won't put junk on your car and they'll do it right the first time.

Faerluna..................do what you gotta do soon. They're going to charge you for tread wear. I'm in complete agreement with casmith....Goodyear tire's suck. Had a problem with my YJ (Jeep) AND my laredo, with goodyear tires. They either cup or are manufactured out of round.

I, for one, have never heard of weights being 'glued' on. They're usually clipped and fastened to the rim via a tire hammer.

My advice.....take the tires back and demand new ones, of a different brand, OR go elsewhere.

The wheel weights you're referring to are being replaced by a newer style that stick to the inside of the rim. It's a lot prettier than the old school ones that show on the outside of the rim. I've raced with the newer ones on and they hold just fine, as long as their put on correctly. Again, I'd find a small private garage that she can trust as opposed to Sam's Club/Walmart or the Stealership.

A follow-up on the Goodyear cupping issue:

Goodyear F1 Eagle A/S were recalled in 2010 due to a cupping issue.

This does not mean that all Goodyears are crappy tires. Quite the contrary, Goodyear and Dunlop score very high on tire tests held worldwide. I've raced on Goodyear tires for 5 years and have had zero issues. All manufacturers go through issues from time to time when developing new products. Just putting it into perspective for you.

I've actually gotten tires at Sam's for years without any problem before. However, this is our first time going to this particular location. I have a feeling that this may be the core of the issue.

I have a regular mechanic that I trust, but I usually don't get tires from them, as they are as pricey as the dealership as well as 30 minutes away now that we have moved.

Gotcha. I was suggesting you have him inspect and balance those tires for you, and check the lug nuts too. Here's a tip on getting good prices on tires.....go to www.tirerack.com , select your vehicle, and you'll get a good selection of tires to choose from. Their prices are better than everybody on just about every tire they carry. Through their sight you can locate one of their authorized tire shops near your house to install the tires for you. They ship them to the place and you just show up for your appointment. It's easy and saves you about $10-$20 per tire depending on what you end up choosing. Just a thought for the future.

I can't remember the name of the place, but there is a place online that sells tires super cheap and ships there wherever you want. You could easily get them shipped to your mechanic if he doesn't mind you purchasing from somewhere else.

I will have to ask my wife, she knows the name. Our LR3 tires where listed anywhere from $290 to $435 each, this place had them for $215 each.
