Don't buy new. Get one a year or two old with about 30K miles and save yourself $20K

We just replaced our 2013 Escape with a 2021.
Been real happy with both of them. The turbo charged engine has plenty of giddy up when that turbo spools up.
I generally hit the auto stop off button, but I have found you can keep it from shutting down by not putting the brake pedal all the way to the stop.
Not anymore.
The used market is nuts right now in general.
Bought my used 14 Raptor with 45k miles for 40k in 19
Was offered 41k recently trade in without buying anything.
If he doesn't want a loaded truck, Ford is offering good discounts(location dependent) on the new F-150's.
I've seen XLT's with some minor options at 40k with 4x4.
The 19+ Ram 1500's are nice trucks. Had one for a year. Interiors are still the best out there.

A lot of people hate the auto/stop feature. It honestly has never bothered me. I hardly even notice it anymore. lol
On that note, I've been peaking at the Escape/Explorers lately. Now that we bought a travel trailer, I need a way to get my jetskis towed. Not sure the wife's Mazda is exactly a tow rig, so, could be nice to get her something more capable. What's crazy is how fast they get up there in price. Looked at a really nice Explorer the other day, looked at the window sticker, and $50k!!! It's insane.
I'm not going to argue that the used market isn't crazy right now (because it is), but to be fair, those Raptors REALLY hold their value. Nice purchase, by the way. Always loved those.
Thats crazy. I did this when I bought my Wife's Pacifica a few years ago.
Dealership had her diving around in a fully loaded new model for $60k. I got the previous year, still fully loaded, with 31k miles for $30k.
Get another Tacoma. I'm on my 3rd and my wife is on her 4th 4 Runner. My son is still driving my 2003 Tacoma at college right now. I've got the 2016 4X4, 4 door, TRD package, with a short bed and have had no trouble hauling family, 2 Labs, kayaks, dead deer carcasses, tons of camping equipment, pallets of grass, and anything else I want in it. Before Toyotas I drove an International Scout, a Chevy Silverado, Chevy Z71, and a Ford F150 but I'll never go back to any of them. Toyota makes the best vehicles I've ever driven, but I'm not into bells and whistles and reliability is my #1 criteria for a truck. Plus at 6 and 9 you don't even need a car seat anymore and your kids will have plenty of room. I've had the 2003, 2010, and the 2016 and none of the 3 have ever been in the shop. Get the tow package though. Even if you don't tow it's great to be able to hook up a cargo basket or bike rack to the rear.

Agree that the start/stop feature is not a big deal. Like most things you get used to it.
That said, it's debatable how much fuel savings you really do get out of it. My wife's 2020 Forester has it and at around 5,000 miles it says we've saved a grand total of 1.89 gallons of fuel. It's also said to add extra weight (bulkier starter) which seems counter productive. Calculated over the course of 100,000 miles that about 37 gallons of fuel saved or roughly 2.5 fill-ups.
Yeah I've never actually tried doing the technical math with mine, but judging off just the quick eye with the numbers, yeah it doesn't seem to do much.
A lot of people seem worried about it. "That can't be good for your truck!" I'm sure Ford did extensive testing with the engineering on it. They weren't going to just release the tech (if you want to call it that) on one of the top selling platforms in the country and be like, "well let's see how it goes!" lol
