Don't buy new. Get one a year or two old with about 30K miles and save yourself $20K

Not anymore.
The used market is nuts right now in general.

Bought my used 14 Raptor with 45k miles for 40k in 19
Was offered 41k recently trade in without buying anything.

If he doesn't want a loaded truck, Ford is offering good discounts(location dependent) on the new F-150's.

I've seen XLT's with some minor options at 40k with 4x4.

The 19+ Ram 1500's are nice trucks. Had one for a year. Interiors are still the best out there.

We just replaced our 2013 Escape with a 2021.
Been real happy with both of them. The turbo charged engine has plenty of giddy up when that turbo spools up.

I generally hit the auto stop off button, but I have found you can keep it from shutting down by not putting the brake pedal all the way to the stop.

A lot of people hate the auto/stop feature. It honestly has never bothered me. I hardly even notice it anymore. lol

On that note, I've been peaking at the Escape/Explorers lately. Now that we bought a travel trailer, I need a way to get my jetskis towed. Not sure the wife's Mazda is exactly a tow rig, so, could be nice to get her something more capable. What's crazy is how fast they get up there in price. Looked at a really nice Explorer the other day, looked at the window sticker, and $50k!!! It's insane.

I'm not going to argue that the used market isn't crazy right now (because it is), but to be fair, those Raptors REALLY hold their value. Nice purchase, by the way. Always loved those.

Thats crazy. I did this when I bought my Wife's Pacifica a few years ago.

Dealership had her diving around in a fully loaded new model for $60k. I got the previous year, still fully loaded, with 31k miles for $30k.

That is true, but out of curiosity I was looking up 15+ F-150(under 50k miles) in the XLT or Lariat trim and they were still in the mid to high 30's. For for the low 40's(with discounts) you could get a 4x4 2021 F-150 XLT with the digital dash and some minor option.
It's just a nuts market. Some of them only dropped 15k after 5 years on the road.

Thank you. I go through them quickly, build then sell, but always find my way back into another. Going to keep this one or the wife may kill me lol.

Yea, pricing in general is through the roof right now, new/used. IIRC I read 72month loan is now the norm for loan duration and now the 84/96 terms aren't so rare anymore.

Yea, I think for the SUV/CUV market there is still a good amount of depreciation, cause IMO they are vastly overpriced to begin with when talking loaded. Bought my wife a new expedition back in late 19, with 10k off msrp and now with 25k miles its $25k below MSRP trade in wise even with the covid pricing spike.

With how well most vehicles are made these days, you can’t really go wrong with a Ford, Ram or Chevy. Or any other truck really.

Try going to autotrader.com, filter by something like under $45,000, under 20,000 miles (or new if you want), select any features you want and see what pops up.

Get another Tacoma. I'm on my 3rd and my wife is on her 4th 4 Runner. My son is still driving my 2003 Tacoma at college right now. I've got the 2016 4X4, 4 door, TRD package, with a short bed and have had no trouble hauling family, 2 Labs, kayaks, dead deer carcasses, tons of camping equipment, pallets of grass, and anything else I want in it. Before Toyotas I drove an International Scout, a Chevy Silverado, Chevy Z71, and a Ford F150 but I'll never go back to any of them. Toyota makes the best vehicles I've ever driven, but I'm not into bells and whistles and reliability is my #1 criteria for a truck. Plus at 6 and 9 you don't even need a car seat anymore and your kids will have plenty of room. I've had the 2003, 2010, and the 2016 and none of the 3 have ever been in the shop. Get the tow package though. Even if you don't tow it's great to be able to hook up a cargo basket or bike rack to the rear.

I’d concur with that. Toyotas can’t be beat in terms of reliability and resale value. I had a 2004 4Runner that was purchased brand new by my dad and past on to me. It had apx. 240K miles on it before giving it to my mom last year. Not a thing wrong with it.

I drive a 2018 4Runner that I bought new. No problems so far.

My wife bought a new 2004 Corolla before we were married. It piled up 250K miles with zero issues before we sold it to her coworker about 2 years ago. I still ask her occasionally if they still have it and she says they’ve given it to their son.

Of all the domestic truck makers, I really like the look of the Dodge Rams and the interiors. That said, I do hear they are a bit unreliable.

*Toyota is set to debut the new Tundra in the next few months. I keep seeing spy shots of the truck on the auto blogs I follow.

Agree that the start/stop feature is not a big deal. Like most things you get used to it.

That said, it's debatable how much fuel savings you really do get out of it. My wife's 2020 Forester has it and at around 5,000 miles it says we've saved a grand total of 1.89 gallons of fuel. It's also said to add extra weight (bulkier starter) which seems counter productive. Calculated over the course of 100,000 miles that about 37 gallons of fuel saved or roughly 2.5 fill-ups.

Yeah I've never actually tried doing the technical math with mine, but judging off just the quick eye with the numbers, yeah it doesn't seem to do much.

A lot of people seem worried about it. "That can't be good for your truck!" I'm sure Ford did extensive testing with the engineering on it. They weren't going to just release the tech (if you want to call it that) on one of the top selling platforms in the country and be like, "well let's see how it goes!" lol

Every manufacturer is doing it these days. A $60 starter is cheaper than the gas you burn idling. I've been driving for 20 years and never had a starter go out.

OK. If anyone is actually following I ended up buying a Chevy Silverado LT double cab all star edition. It’s a leftover that couldn’t be sold because the dealer was closed due to COVID. MSRP was $49000. I offered $35000 and they accepted. Technically the truck is a year and a half old but brand new, warranty and all. I couldn’t pass up the deal and I am sure the dealer made out with COVID money on it. All said and done, plenty of room in the back for the kids, the bed is a nice size, V8 engine is sweet, and time will tell the rest of the story. Thanks for all who weighed in. It was helpful.

For the record, Ford trucks are nice but I cannot do the suicide doors with kids. I tried that with the old Tacoma and they could never keep clean while stepping in the right pattern to get in. Now each kid has his/her own door and window.

Crazy to see these prices. I bought my F150 Lariat in 2005 brand new for ~30K. Still drive it every day and only have 90K miles on it. I plan on driving it into the ground or until retirement in ~15 years, whichever comes first.
