Jets to trade Vilma for Portis?

CNNSI.COM

The conversation began like an Abbott and Costello routine, with Commanders running back Clinton Portis turning to Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma during a promotional appearance in Miami and asking, "Did you hear that you're going to Washington?" To which Vilma replied, "For what?" Upon being informed that the word on the Internet had him being traded to the Commanders, Vilma said, "Will I like Washington?" "Yeah," replied Portis, his former teammate at the University of Miami. "Will I like New York?"

Pretty interesting.....

That would also be a dumb move by the jets. They traded for Thomas Jones this the offseason.

Well, you know how it goes during this time of year. Every sportsite is trying to catch a scoop no matter how it may make no sense whatsoever.

Then again....whose to say they won't run the 4 back system. :D

Not going to happen. Vilma is one of the Jets most popular players, and they just traded for Thomas Jones. They are making the Jets sound like the Commanders.

Enough already, the Jets are set at RB with Thomas Jones, they don't need Portis whom by the way can't stay healthy.

Well, Portis is a far better back than Thomas Jones. So, if I could land Portis that included Jones, I would do it. (Except Portis is a wussy)

Actually, I have heard a number of Jets fans who feel Vilma isn't built for the 3-4 and are willing to see him traded.

There was also an earlier rumor between the Jets and Commanders that involved Betts, Vilma and draft picks. (This was before the Jones pickup of course).

Regardless of all that, this rumor is either BS or a joke, most likely the latter. As stated above, The Jets getting Jones at RB discounts any move that involves Portis.

But it's not too crazy to think that Vilma might get moved, be it to the Commanders or elsewhere.

Living in the NY area, I've heard the Vilma trade talks too. My problem with the whole thing is they all ready picked up Thomas and Vilma is a fan favorite here. Two signs that doesn't make sense. It's more likely they trade Vilma for draft pick consideration or a player pick combo.

Far better? Naa I wouldn't go that far, he's good but so is Thomas Jones.

What's their problem with Vilma? Doesn't fit the Parcells/Belicheck mold for 3-4 ILBs? That would seem a little short-sighted to me.

Dude, Jones is a JAG.

Portis averaged 1500 yards per season in his first 4 seasons in the league.

Thomas has only had two 1000 yard seasons in his seven NFL season. Neither of those were 1500 yard seasons.

Vilma struggled in the first half to make the change to the Mangini's 3-4 defense. He played a lot better as the season went on. I think this was a natural issue for many players. Some people don't realize how incredible it was for Ellis to make the transition as he did. While he had some problems, it was a real feat worth noting and Ellis deserves major props for doing it.

As for Vilma; I really like this guy. He is a class act, and a damn good football player. I would take him in a heartbeat. He has the ability to play the 3-4.

1. Jets are set at RB after trading for Jones

2. 'Skins picked up London Fletcher in FA.

It's a joke.

Also living in the NY area, I have heard the trade talk as well. In fact, I think rumors involving Portis may have cropped up a few months ago.

Even though Vilma is a fan favorite, there's a pretty big contingent of Jet fans who think Vilma is more valuable to trade than to keep due to the switch to 3-4.

In any case, this trade doesn't make sense at all for the Jets.

Bottom line, we agree completely.
