Newman as a Punt Returner?

I keep hearing people who are afraid to risk Newman's health returning punts as he is so important to the defense.

I understand that logically the more plays you play, the more likely it is to get hurt, even if 5-6 punt returns a game, and quite a few of them fair catches & pooch kicks & into the endzone, is actually a very small percentage of extra plays.

I've been watching NFL football and the Cowboys since 1967, and I can tell you without actually looking up stats that I don't believe punt returners get hurt very often. I would even say it's very rare and that return blockers and defenders probably get hurt much more often than returners. If you want to win, you have to put the best players in position to make plays.

I never saw Mel Renfro, who is in the HOF as a CB, every hurt returning punts. As a matter of fact, he was the ProBowl MVP once for two td returns, I believe. I never saw Deon get hurt returning a punt, although he may have been nicked a time or two. Bob Hayes was a return man. It's nice if you find a specialist who just happens to excell at it and can be among the best and scariest in the game, but that's actually quite rare.

Most teams end up going no where with punt returns because they have nobodies doing the job. If Newman is the best we have, then put the ball in his hands and lets score some huge returns till they start kicking out of bounds like they did with Deon. Newman is more likely to pull a muscle running in coverage or get hurt making a tackle than he is running back punts...my opinion.

Completetly agree.
Also - our depth is much better at DB, making an injury to him less severe (although still a tough player to lose.)
But lastly - I still think this is a way to aggressively try to score. We can't be so conservative any more.

it would not be a bad idea 2, but what about skyler green?

Skyler just took a job at Enterprise Car Rental in Baton Rouge.

Umm, Skyler is gone.

I agree with this, most of the hype behind Newman was his return skills, but we seldom use them now. Just a bunch of draft hype to make him more attractive to us, wish our memories weren't so short when it comes to this (like the Carp being immediately ready). Hold them accountable for what they hype.

On a short field, I think he should always be in there, and maybe when you got the whole field, we will try Rector. Although the whole field is really when we need a good return the most.

He could tuck it, and noone would find the ball again.

yeah we can have BP as our kick returner and a guy holding a hamburger in front of him so he can run fast :lmao2:

I agree with you Wayne, if Newman is clearly the best we got; put him back there. However, if the difference between him and Rector is small, I would rather risk Rector even if the risk is small.

Please Bill, don't chance our starting shutdown corner out there returning punts.

Guys, Newman is the best member of our secondary and in the running for the best defensive player on our team.

Why on earth would you want to risk that by putting him at one of the most injury prone positions in the NFL. I'll happily take even 10 less yards a punt return on average to keep Newman healthy.

Newman is far too valuable to risk putting out there.

Did you read Wayne's post?? I just don't think the risk is high at all.

I think your wrong about punt returning being one of the most injury prone positions in the NFL.

Exactly, I would have to say the running back position is by far the most injury prone position.
