This just in from Mickey Spagnola: According to Cowboys associate trainer Britt Brown, MRI results showed cornerback Terence Newman has a slight groin tear that likely will keep him out a couple of weeks.

Technically the injury is a groin strain. In any case, the Cowboys don't want this becoming a long-term injury like his partially-torn plantar fascia last year. The Cowboys are here until Aug. 12, so Newman's last practice in Oxnard might have been Monday.

We'll have more from head coach Wade Phillips after practice.

Good. We should let him rest all training camp and preseason too ... just in case.

This makes me nervous given last years explanation of newman and glenn's injuries.

the upside is we will get to see jenkins, ball and scandrick play against the chargers alot most likely.

Fortunately it happened early in TC. He should be fine by mid-August.

This stuff always worries me.

It seemed like last year our guys would walk off the field. The first reports would always say, "nothing serious...day to day"...The our players would be out forever.

This sounds like something that will hamper Newman for a while.

Hopefully, I'm chicken-littleing a bit....

this is positive news--gives our young cbs extras rotations.
Yeah, cross your fingers CC... maybe T.O. will tear a knee ligament!

DMN Blog:

5:29 -- Terence Newman is on the field, but he's wearing shorts, a T-shirt and a cap. He's got a shoulder around his shoulders and is shooting the bull with T.O. and Co. during a punt coverage teaching drill.

I was at the first practice on opening of camp Friday. TNew looked AWESOME. He was ready for season to start right there. He batted a pass away right in front of me that was intended for Crayton. Got a big cheer from fans. I'm hoping the picture I snapped works out (will have it tomorrow) He was hamming it up with team mates, and dancing around. Looked really quick and CONFIDENT.

He will be fine with the break. Healing for him is biggest thing. He is a slight guy, very ropey!

As long as he's healthy Newman is gonna be solid. Character guy it seems.

I don't mind it at all. If there's one player who doesn't need the reps, it's Newman. It still gives Newman two weeks to get ready for the season. It gives Mike Jenkins more reps (and from the sound of it, he needs it) and gives Alan Ball more reps as the slot DB in nickel, who is an unproven commodity in that role.

As far as "injury prone" ... I would be more worried if he pulled a muscle while running, like most groin pulls, but he got kneed in the leg and the collision caused his left leg to slip out from underneath him and he did the splits. It was a fluke play.

Like I said in another thread-be RELIEVED that Jerry drafted Jenkins with the #28, and NOT some wideout like Thomas, Kelly, Jackson, Hardy, and Sweed(all of whom aren't all that great to begin with).

Not trying to say Newman is replacable(of course, he's the heart of our secondary)-but remember last year how Wade couldn't implement his schemes when Reeves and N. Jones(both of whom are nothing more than decent Cover 2 corners) got a bulk of the reps. This year-at least we have some good young talent who can step in.
