Newman or Leftwich?

If you could turn back the clock to the 2003 draft which one would you choose? I know that BP has taken some heat from some people who think we passed on a franchise QB to take Newman. Personally I can't argue with the pick. Newman was the best player in the draft on many teams boards and I don't think you can go wrong taking the BPA. I know the kid had a shaky year but give him a pass rush and I think he can be an elite corner.

I am still not sold on Leftwich... that being said, I really did like him alot coming out of Marshall...

I'll stick with the Newman pick...

I'll stick with Newman. He hasn't sold me but neither has Leftwich. I feel that Henson can be a competent QB whereas I don't feel the same way about our secondary.

I wanted Leftwich on Draft Day.

But I am not as convinced as I was then. I really think Byron is going to have a lot of problems staying healthy in his career. He is taking wicked shots, and stands in the pocket to long to a fault. For some reason when he gets hit so many seem to put him in awkward positions. I think a lot of it is his long and wide stance when he throws. He already misses games, and I do not see it stopping.

I was not disappointed we took Newman, and was/is glad we got him. I think the true answer to this question still will not be answered for a couple more years.

Hopefully Newman comes out on top!

Leftwich still has a ways to go before he becomes a star in the league. I'm certainly not sold on him.

Sorry... the jury is still out on him...

He is up one week... down the next... I have nothing against him... I hope he does well except when he play us...

But he is certainly not a better player at this point...

i like leftwich but the guy's a statue, that's why he gets killed and oft injured.
Great arm, great accuracy, could be a Mcnair though without the mobility...always on IR. They better have a good backup.
i still like Newman a lot. I think Henson has the potential to be a lot better than Leftwich too.

no he's not...he may end up that way, but he isnt right now...

Newman finished strong and played well as a rookie, he was a pro bowl alternate...Leftwich isnt even remotely close to a probowl QB right now

It's as simple as this...

The QB position is more important then the CB position, by far, and we need both. And the CB position isn't as effective now with the new rules. I like Newman and think he had a solid season last year despite other people saying he had a bad year, but I'd take Leftwich.

I'll take Kevin Williams.

In all seriousness, I'm still not sold on Leftwich. I liked the Newman pick at the time, and I still do. I think some are giving up on him too soon. He struggled a little at times this season, but he was still pretty solid - and a lot was being asked of him. I expect him to be even better next year.

One thing people have to remember is that Leftwich is a young QB. People saying "I'm not sold" on Leftwich have to understand that.

He's already at least an average QB and he'll get better. He was working with a lot of young WRs last year (other then Jimmy Smith) and he doesn't have any great recieving TEs, yet he's still playing solid already.

Not many second year QBs end up with a 82 QB rating. I really liked him coming out of college. He seems to have "it". He's a leader and he's got (to steal a word from Parcells) Moxie. He's got a Jake Delhomme mentality but a much better, more accurate arm.

Leftwich is a 60% passer and only had 10 interceptions on 441 attempts (which is great for a kid his age, Big Ben had 11 interceptions on 295).

Do you really think you are a better team with Newman than Leftwich?

I don't understand why this is a question.

Some people just ask things to stimulate conversation during slow times.

Some people just ask these types of questions because they still are mad we did not draft this guy or that and can not let it go.

I imagine this guy just asked to stimulate conversation.

I was a HUGE leftwich homer as I watched pretty much every game that was televised.

I think he is doing a pretty good job for a young QB, he DOES need to get rid of the ball a little faster but I think he has done a good job otherwise.

He had all day and night most of the time to scan the field while at Marshall, they have a program that is very good at pass blocking....he just needs to get used to the speed of the game and I think he has progressed in that area already.

With that said, even though I wanted Leftwich during the draft, I have never complained about getting Newman....it is just water under the bridge now and a waste of time to complain about it after the fact.

I agree with your point, but it's a double edge sword.

I don't believe we go 10-6 last year without Newman. However, we'd be much better right now if we had Leftwich instead.

Say what you will, but that 10-6 season meant a lot to me just for the fact that we were 15-33 the three seasons before. It was literally painful to endure going through.

Now, let's just say that Henson does develop into a pretty decent QB, then Newman would be the best pick. If Henson is a complete bust, then of course I'd rather have Leftwich.

If I had to choose right now, I'd say Leftwich. But, the NFL is a crazy world where crazy things happen. And it's not like we completely lost out on drafting Newman.

In all honesty, neither. I wanted a trade down to take Williams or Trufant.

What does it matter though? We got Newman. EOS

I agree, Newman is a good player and there definitly arn't too many more important positions than cornerback, quarterback is one of them (defensive end and offensive tackle are the other).

I am also a Leftwich homer, which is probably the reason why I don't see why you would even start a thread like this, but I don't see how you can pass on a quarterback like that when your team has an obvious need at the position.

Henson was had for only a third round pick the next season, which has the value of a pick in the fourth round of the current draft. If all he turns into is a good backup or a decent starter, he wouldn't be a bust.
