A couple of days ago we asked BTB members for their mock Cowboys drafts in our Mock Draft Challenge. Today we look at the results of that challenge.

On Thursday last week we kicked off the 2014 BTB Mock Draft Challenge in which we asked BTB members for their mock Cowboys drafts and then asked the community to vote on the mocks. But instead of simply asking for a list of randomly put together names, we limited the flexibility by establishing some specific rules: The mock draft had to be conducted according to the player rankings provided by the CBSSports.com big board. No trading down was allowed, and trading up was only permissible if the trade value points given up were equal to or greater than the trade value points received.

This significantly limited the options in the mock drafts and forced the mockers to make decisions that they might not have had to make with a less rigorous approach. One of the issues of working with a big board in a mock like this is that there will always be players who are perceived to be ranked too low, and there were scattered complaints to that effect (it's funny how there are almost never any complaints about players being ranked too high). The big boards will get better as we get closer to the draft as we'll have more and better information on the prospects, so we'll definitely repeat this mock draft challenge after the Combine and free agency.

Here's the consensus seven-round mock draft that emerged from our exercise, with the comments for each pick provided by BTB-members who picked the respective players in their mock drafts.

The Cowboys seem to never draft the fan's choices. The team would be much better off if they did. It says alot about the GM.

LOL. Many fans would be upset as the fans are all over the place. No, the draft is not a democratic process.

I'd take those first four picks as long as Sutton loses some weight and plays the way he did in 2012 not 2013

this year we have no choice,we have one guy on the Dline who can play in Ware and his health is a big question mark,we have to draft big on the Dline.

I really do not like seeing small running backs drafted. I do not believe they have the durability. DO not get me wrong a back like Tavon is nice but that late in the draft I am sure you could find a similar guy to Thomas that is UD.

that is the perception but i believe it is very untrue all the same.
while there may be a spot here or there where general fan wisdom would outperform the cowboys FO that is more rare than the rule imho....

last year this was the dallas haul for the mel kiper fan draft.

Dallas Cowboys
1(27) Johnathan Hankins DT Ohio St. ---went round 2 to the giants and had little to no impact.
2(47) Cornellius Carradine DE Florida St. --injured reserve guy. chance to make future impact.
3(80) Stepfan Taylor RB Stanford --went in 5th round... got about 30 carries all year.
3(89) Baccari Rambo S Georgia--went in 6th round. played poorly in 3 starts.
4(111) Alex Hurst T LSU--not in football.

So the one guy who would not have been a total reach spent the year on injured reserve.

This article is BS. The fans would draft four defensive backs in the first four rounds if this website is to be believed.

defensive LINEMEN.
and yes they probably would.
the article even gives you the percentiles and generally DL are also the 2nd choice at each pick.

as fans we tunnel vision in on areas of weakness. especially ones the media wont shut up about.
DL is hugely a need and we are hugely aware.

Oh yeah, I'm right there with you. Maybe WE are aware, but take a gander around here at how many people think we just need to add a new free safety and cut all the corners and get new ones and = Seattle Seahawks success. It's ridiculous.

here's the 2012 MKI results for Dallas

Dallas Cowboys
1(14) Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama -- 3 starts in 2 years.
2(45) Vinny Curry DE Marshall -- 0 starts, 4 sacks in 2 years
3(82) Michael Brewster C Ohio St. -- 10 starts, only 3 this year.
4(113) Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnati -- 27 starts, good player. Was drafted 2 rounds higher in real draft.

fans all have different takes. the majority of fans want to draft 10 DL in 7 picks.
FS is probably the 2nd most popular pick with OL 3rd.
((those were the same top 3 last year except it was OL first, Safety then DL mostly))

End of the day fans are just smart enough to be dangerous.

Fans will throw every resource at any weakness and ignore everything else.
Real drafts(not run by Lacewell) do not do that.
It would be absolutely shocking if Dallas grabbed more than 3 DL this year.

I still remember the infamous Goodrich, Larrimore, Edwards 3 CB draft... what a waste of a class.

Fans wanting to be like Seattle is the problem.
Last year they wanted to be the Ravens.
Next year the name we want to be will probably change again.

Just be good... and maximize resources.

Dallas clearly needs to add depth and talent to the defense.

That only problem is that we always do the Kiper draft several months ahead of time. If you were able to take a consensus of the mocks the last couple of weeks leading up to the draft I would say ours would look a ton different.

best example of a consensus we have imho.
can't speak to why it gets completed so early.

i can tell you without fail we'd have drafted decastro a couple years ago (~10 spots higher then he eventually went while expecting him to be all pro by now) but other than that very little evidence as who we'd select without a ton of work.
i can assure you from being in chat rooms and on the board at the time we are quite far from perfect.
