The man of few words summed it up perfectly!

It's only preseason, and the Cowboys were without plenty of their starters, but Jason Garrett admitted Sunday night's loss to the 49ers wasn't pretty.

Perfect fodder for a coach in a meeting room. The veterans know better. The bubble guys are crapping their knickers.

I think they are, too. Or, protecting players and putting the few guys competing for roster spots in position to show it. We'll have a good week of practice and then people will suddenly start getting healthier next week as we prepare for the Giants.

I also think SF put a little extra into their gameplan to possibly boost team confidence. I think they are in for a long year.

I think the last two preseasons show how lacking we are for a backup QB. If we had a better backup QB, we would be able to move the ball much better. We went 12-4 after an 0-4 preseason last year so its not really a big deal. But it would be nice if evaluate some of these fringe offensive players without so may 3 and outs

Hill and Gus Johnson were not that bad. And Randle had some good touches. His ability to get skinny going thru the line impressed me. McFadden and Dunbar had limited touches but were underwhelming. Cowboys were just having a ton of trouble handling the zone blitzes, whether it was a run or a pass.

I like the way this team is getting trained for the start of the season. The team is now looking at which players want to represent that Star.

I think we all know who the starters will be, now the team is looking for the players that can come in and have their back. I saw a little fight out there, some fast urgency, physical football even though they lost. There are going to be some really good players that will be cut that might find a job somewhere else. The Cowboys will keep the best of the rest.

Cowboys on three..make it loud! lol

You wonder, right? We handicap our starters, they blitz us like crazy. Gives Garrett something to complain about all week heading into the dress rehearsal game. Gives SF fans something to get excited about heading into what's going to be a long season for them, and a new first-time HC something to build off of. Add to it that JG and JT were acquaintances going back to NFLE when Garrett was a player...you wonder how much the coaches discuss what they want to get out of each game in a preseason.

Reminds me of Jeff Fisher having his punter aim at the video board in Dallas prior to the inaugural season, giving Jerry tons of coverage that week re: how monstrous the video board was and that it had to be raised up and keeping the Cowboys in the news cycle the whole time in the process. You know some of that stuff is planned in advance; you just don't know how much.

I would think during the preseason the coaches would talk to each other and say "Hey, I need to look at these people, so can you run some of this or that and vice versa"... I would be curious to know how much of that goes on. I'm sure it happens, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it is a common practice.

It also seems common that we pick up players from the teams we play in preseason. I know it's largely because we saw them in the game tape but I wonder if the coaches say "Hey , I got this kid Laurent Robinson and we are going to have to cut him, keep an eye on him".

Coach/Owner rapport is quite commonplace i'm sure. JG and Tomsula have a little history together as well.

Most of what you and Idgit mentioned probably happens all the time. And I have little doubt it happened this game as well.

I saw some things on twitter that speculates about why Garrett is handling the games this way. It was suggested that he was playing 1 string lower than the opponent in an effort to gauge the depth of the roster and better evaluate said depth. Our 2nd string vs opponents 1st or our 3rd against opponents 2nd. They said he did the same last season. It also gives him a reason to dig into the players and get a message across. For a coach that is usually uplifting and mostly positive, its a perfect excuse to really lay into the team and light a fire.

2 things I found to be dumb by JG this last game, and I say JG, but for whoever decided Romo and dmc would play 3 plays.

YOu guys all say do whatever to avoid injury in PS games, so why put either of those 2 in for just 3 plays??
you cant evaluate romo having him hand off 2 times and then throw the short pass to dunbar.
That did nothing but put tony at risk, there was no logical reason for that.
Add to that only frederick and berndaue was in the OL.

And dmc what is the point of 2 carries? even worse the starting OL not in game.

makes no sense to me. If anything it just made dmc lose confidence.

Playing them for 2-3 possesions makes more sense, or just dont play them at all.

I won't be surprised if the NFL thinks that this gives the Cowboys some sort of an advantage. They will make a new rule - lets call it the Jason Garrett rule. The rule will force all teams to win at least 1 preseason game and they will have to play their 1st stringers for more than 1 quarter. If not obeyed the team will lose draft picks and subject to fines. Then they will say its because of the rules ******..blame it on the rules.
