I thought I read where he was in semi retirement. Helping his Son out here and there but no longer actively coaching or looking for a job in the NFL?

I disagree, if he still could coach today's game yes. But it seemed he was so stuck in his ways he just is not good coach now. Now that being said he would be pretty good in one of those fancy "consultant" roles teams tend use.

Was the defense that much better this year, or were we just ale to hide it better with the run game?

It was "better" because the team plyed more to the strengths of the corners with more man and less Tampa 2.

wasn't the yards per play pretty much the same? I man you could argue that the 2014 defense had less to work with, ie no Ware and Hatcher, but I think the results were almost the same.

Yes but the big plays were down and that is what killed the defense the previous year. The DBs were out of position playing the zone schemes and that opened up more big plays and not getting off the field.
