Next Gen Cowboys

As some of you know, I coach my son's pee wee team every year.

This year, my son moved up to the 10-11 year old division, which has teams named after the NFC, and, of course, I asked for the Cowboys!

Deep here in Skins country, naturally I had several players (and assistant coaches) who weren't exactly thrilled to be drafted by the Cowboys. But nevertheless, I made a pledge to myself to instill a bit of Cowboys Tradition into the team every opportunity I got.

When we did our equipment pickup and jersey assignment, I told each boy what famous Cowboy great used to wear his number.

At our first practice, when I huddled up the kids at the end, I taught them all the famous Cowboys battle cry, and watched their dads roll their eyes when all the boys yelled, in unison: "How Bout them Cowboys!"

Just before our first game last week, I told the boys that the most fearsome defenses in Cowboys history bore the name "Doomsday!" I told the kids that, if they earned it, they too could call themselves Doomsday.

I told them that to earn it, though, they needed to not only shut out our first opponents, the Giants, but they needed to hold them to 4 first downs or less.

When our game ended with a 12-0 win (only 3 first downs allowed), the boys huddled themselves up and without me even prompting them, they all shouted "DOOMSDAY!"

... almost made a tear come to my eye...

And after that, all the kids, and even their Skins fans dads, joined us in a "How Bout Them Cowboys!"

Anyway, thought some of you might enjoy me sowing some Cowboys seeds deep in Redsk*ns territory.

We had another game yesterday morning and were rolling 13-0 over the Panthers in the first quarter, but the game got postponed due to a huge thunder-storm that came through the area. We'll have to see when we can get it re-scheduled.

Awesome story.

Absolutely nothing better than youth sports. Had 3 kids that went the whole route through HS and one who played college ball too. The memories are just as great when they're little.

Still have an 11 year old daughter who plays hoops and soccer so I still have a taste of that innocent age.

I kind of like our jersey and pant combo... but no doubt those helmets are awesome!

I wish the stars on ours were a bit bigger at least, but I wasn't able to have input on ordering them.

The only thing I insisted on was having the star, as a couple years ago they used the Wyoming logo with the bucking bronco... unacceptable!

I'm not sure about the tailgate this year. The game here is the weekend before Thanksgiving, and there's a good chance I may be out of town for the Holiday. I don't have my plans set yet.

So after eviscerating the Eagles, blowing-out the Bears, and flummoxing the Falcons...

... tonight we have the 4-1 Cowboys taking on the 4-0 Commanders!

While I'd take the same result, I hope we can go a bit better than 6 field goals. :
