My goodness, there's no end to the stuff fans will complain about. The emotional difference between where we'd be with three wins in a row and the Minnesota bye coming to town and throw-ourselves-off-a-cliff-we-lost-to-the-Lions is unbelievable. Maybe it's just me, because I expected a narrow loss in Detroit, but some of you guys get a grip. There's just nothing you can say when somebody's complaining about 'the next man up.' I mean, I can't even think of a plausible alternative. You'd like the guy *behind* the next man to step up? Some other unrelated man up? Play the first guy, who's too injured to play?

At some point, in your own head, doesn't a little bell go off that suggests perhaps complaining about something that doesn't make any sense because you want to feel included in the sobfest is probably not a good idea? I'd think it would be better to just make another thread related to how the team wasn't prepared at RB or OG or something and just pile on there instead of trying out new territory when the argument doesn't make any sense. Am I all alone here?

next man up is definitely true...just bc this team sucks and the next man up is no better than the OP doesnt mean its not true...teams win championships with depleted teams...

Packers were completely decimated
Giants were depleted
Ravens of last year had tons of injuries

blame Jerry

Wrong x3.
The average fan is fairly thoughtless but these things are not that hard to investigate.
The Packers did lose a bunch of "suspected" starters. But only 1 or 2 guys they lost ever started for them again.
Giants basically the same case. They lose FAR fewer pieces than either the 2012 or 2013 Cowboys but also the guys they lost were guys on the down slope like Osi.
They also went a mere 9-7.

The Ravens got BETTER not worse. They ADDED talent during the year and the guys they lost again were guys who would soon be retired.

All of those teams had career years from key guys.
Packers had Rodgers go off.
Giants had Pierre Paul go All-Pro.
Ravens had Torrey Smith come out of obscurity to go ballistic at WR.

The next man up theory is BS. But it is all you have once injuries occur so every team will sell it.

But there is zero way except luck to know you can pick up a guy off the street and he can really help you.
You can't control who is on the street at any given time.

Threads like this crack me up.

What are they supposed to say when an injury happens? We're screwed - there goes the season? Well, there's always next year?

The coaching staff has a goal - win every game. The players, by and large, feel the same way. Creating the sense in the locker room that they are all in this together, and that if you are on the roster, you will be expected to contribute is absolutely necessary.

At the same time it is the hilarious double standard of fans.
As soon as you see a banged up opponent on the schedule the first thing that gets mentioned is how that opponent is injured.
But if it is your own team the injury should be magically covered via masking tape and not effect play at all.

Until the NFL expands rosters and loosens the salary cap injuries are going to determine quite a lot about outcomes.
I am really hoping they expand 2 more regular season games and add 3 or 4 roster spots.
It really is foolish to complain about guys like Drake Nevis/Jarius Wynn who you had to sign off the street.
Almost as foolish as expecting them to play at the level of your original intended starter.

When you get to the 6th guy at a group that is no longer depth.
That is something else and it usually sucks.

I buy the next man up because it's not just the Dallas Cowboys going through this. It's all 32 teams.

.

funny this was brought up on here. Aikman on WFAN poked fun of teams/players using the phrase "next man up". Aikman says..."is there a worse phrase? I mean of course you are going with the next man up. What are your other options? Skip the next man and go with the guy below him on the depth chart?"

not used to hearing humor out of troy.

To expand on thoughts above.
At one point NFL draft picks were your depth.
You keep veterans around and they had to be beaten out by rookies.
Nowadays you already go grab 5-7 rookies per year so you can make the cap work; and they need to play day 1 now.
Veterans cost too much and are gone.
When you get injuries you are looking over the discarded player pool and hoping for a good fit at the right cost.
But you are also teaching a guy a new scheme in many cases or plugging in guys with only pre-season game experience on the fly.

Hey, don't get me wrong, the injuries are very real and very much a problem for the Cowboys right now.

It's just that the team has to operate as if they didn't happen. It's the only way for them to get through the rest of the season, and to create unity in the locker room.

At the core of it, is it BS? Yes, there are definitely injuries that cannot be overcome. The coaching staff would not be doing their jobs if they didn't work to create an environment for the remaining players to rally around that and support their teammates.
