An unfortunate injury occurred during bowl season. Michigan's Jake Butt blew out his knee.

What a great replacement for Jason Witten he could be. Second round, do it, Jerry!

Plus, we'll get to repeatedly say "tight end Jake Butt". Giggle.

Everybody has to think this is a slam dunk as the Cowboys 2nd round pick. He is both a TE and he is injured.

He'll be the Butt of many jokes if he is drafted in the 2nd.

Only this time, he's actually awesome. LOL

I honestly don't think he gets out of the first round. An ACL is not that big of a deal, and he's too good to fall far.

Our one year MASH unit for 2nd round picks needs to stop

This guy is a kind of a Witten clone out of college. He's really good, and there's no nerve involved this time. Just a knee.

I honestly havent seen him play...we do need to start looking for his replacement though in the not too distant future.

He was a 2nd rounder anyways,

I would think the injury would at least drop him a round.

I'm a fan of his and I would definitely use a 3rd on him. He'll play next year most likely.

The straight forward type of knee injuries don't cause player to drop very much anyway. One that comes to mind is Tank Carradine. He was projected as a late first without the knee injury but with it ended up being drafted 2-9.

The timing of the injury I think puts his availeabilty in question to about the week 6 to 10 mark IMO. That will scare off a lot of GMs and coaches who are in win now mode to save their jobs.

As predicatable as the tides IMO. Escobar is a goner, Hanna taking a really long time coming back from what is described as a bone bruise, we dont know what Gathers is, and Witten cant play forever.

2.32 isn't meaningfully different from a third-rounder.

When it comes to draft rounds, Butt should go number 2.

I would never have known that Hanna would be significantly better blocker than Escobar. The bone bruise that keeps a player on IR all season does not sound good. That was the initial diagnosis on Anthony Spencer before he ended up having micro-fracture surgery and was never the same.

For Gathers it will be all about his mental ability to learn the position. I'm almost certain that he can do it physically. At 290 pounds he is highly likely to be able to block with just a year of NFL training. If he can block then that's enough to get him on the field because as long as Witten is around, the 2nd TE won't get many opportunities to catch passes.

Jake Butt:
Skill-Set Summary: After Jim Harbaugh rebuilt and David Shaw sustained the Stanford program, the Cardinal has produced a number of tight end prospects for the NFL. Players like Coby Fleener, Levine Toilolo, Austin Hooper, and Zach Ertz have all been drafted from Stanford. Butt is perfect for Harbaugh's pro-style system, meaning Butt should translate extremely well to the NFL.

In the passing-driven NFL, teams are looking for tight ends who can be dangerous receivers, and Butt illustrated that ability last season. The senior is a real weapon in the passing game. He runs excellent routes and has the quickness to get downfield quickly. Butt's hands are reliable and he does an excellent job of securing the football. Butt does a very good job of making leaping contested catches and hanging onto the football while getting hit in the air. Routinely, he uses his size, hands, and leaping ability to make receptions over safeties. He is just too big for them to cover him.

Even though Butt isn't ultra fast or uber-athletic, he still shows some run-after-the-catch skills. Butt has deceptive speed and can really hurt defenses going down the middle seam. He is also adept at finding the soft spots in zone and getting open for his quarterback.

While receiving tight ends are in demand, offensive coordinators love three-down tight ends who are capable blockers along with serving as receivers. Butt was a decent blocker for Michigan last year. He isn't a force in the ground game, but he isn't a liability.

As a run blocker, Butt gets in good position and engages his defenders. He could use more strength to sustain his blocks longer as defenders get off his blocks quickly. At the point of attack, Butt doesn't really pack a punch. He does a nice job contributing to double teams on edge rushers though. There are also plays where Butt does a good job of using his athleticism to get position to stop speed rushers off the edge. He is better in pass protection than run blocking right now. Showing some improvement in his run blocking as a senior could help his draft stock.

For the NFL, Butt should be a three-down starter who is a solid receiver and quality blocker. He could be an excellent weapon in the red zone with his leaping and blocking skills. Teams will want Butt to improve his run blocking, but he has the potential to be a three-down starter who is a nice contributor to a passing attack.

Witten fell to the 3rd round. Witten was a great college player but likely fell because he was not a freak athlete or dominant blocker. Butt seems very similar to Witten coming out of college in terms of scouting reports. Not a freak athlete or dominant blocker but can always get open and is a high effort blocker.

There seems to be several very athletic TEs in this draft. Not all teams are as focused on blocking by TEs as the Cowboys. Many teams with jump to draft the guys that are more athletic than Butt, IMO.

I don't really want to draft a TE like Butt,if we must draft a TE then I want a TE like Kelce who can line up all over the field and block and has speed.
