I give you.....Patrick Kearney DE Atlanta Falcons. He's an unrestricted FA next year on a team that has no hope of getting to the big game before he retires. He can easily be converted as was Ellis to SLB. He's probably more nibble than Ellis.

I love Pat Kearney. Loved him when he came out of Virgina in 99 but no chance to draft him. Having said that, Kearney has played in the 34 before and he looked horrible. I think Kearney is a straight 43 DE.

I am in denial and think Ellis will be back next year.

Maybe they can draft Spencer from Purdue. He is a DE that could make the transition to OLB.

Did he play in the 3-4 as a DE or an OLB? That might make a difference.

I would not count Ellis out just yet. How the surgury goes and his rehab will determine what is in Ellis future.

Hopefully its Bobby Carp.

Hes got his chance now to show what hes got so lets hope he can do it.

Adalius Thomas is a UFA after this year, and he's a natural SSLB in the 3-4. But given his sack numbers the past couple of years (he already has 8 sacks this year), he'll probably come with a steep price tag.

I agree. This is Carpenters chance to shine. He needs to make the most of it. He could not ask for a better game to try and make statement than the one aginst the Colts.

per PFT

Falcons DE Patrick Kerney is out for the season with a ruptured right pectoral muscle.

Replace one aging DE/OLB on injured reserve for another aging DE on injured reserve? Nah, I'd rather wait out Ellis' rehab.

way too early to be thinking about this. Carpenter can win this position over by the end of the season. Then we wouldn't need to worry about it.

True... but we will have some money to spend, although we need to address the OL issue...

Carpenter can probably win the job and be a pretty solid player there. However, I'd like to get someone who is a prety dominant player. I really don't see Carpenter as being dominant at LOLB.

I would like to have dominant players at a lot of positions, but the fact is solid is about the best you can hope for most of the time. Still, we HAVE to improve our pass rush if we want to crossover from good defense to outstanding, and that's what makes this a key position. Carpenter has a good mix of physical traits (size/speed) and agressive nature - let's hope he can turn that into something worthwhile.

Not another first round LBer!!!

Hopefully, Glymph or Carpenter (or a combination of both) can become solid LBers. If not, we will draft or sign one, since we won't know Ellis is back by draft time.
