The ref on the field said (direct quote) If a kickoff hits a player out of bounds before hitting anyone inbounds, then the ball is out of bounds (and was never considered touched by anyone in play) which makes it considered that the kickoff was out of bounds. I've seen it happen before where a kickoff hits a receiver out of bounds (before hitting anyone else), I know I am right about the rules and I am not terribly worried about anything much beyond that.
