Thought I'd round up some info on rookies that are making progress around the division so as what to potentially expect:
WR Desean Jackson – Eagles, Round 2 #49
He’s had a monster camp for them and was their standout offensive performer in their first preseason game…Gets great separation and will catch in traffic…Has picked up the playbook incredibly quickly…and, yeah, the dude is fast.
Word is, the Eagles playbook has been incorporating A LOT of fades in the red zone.
DT Trevor Laws – Eagles, Round 2 #47
Had the only Eagles sack in Game 1 of the preseason, they seem to be happy with him…Not bad for an Eagles team that hasn’t had a first round pick since…2006??
S Kenny Phillips – Giants, Round 1 #31
Guy has been a monster in camp and all the coaches are raving about him...Verrrry disappointing to hear all the great things about him
CB Terrell Thomas – Giants, Round 2 #63
Has had a good camp and has shown good technique and coverage in drills…Probably won’t be far up on the depth chart of DBs but he’s seeing plenty of action and success on ST…He’s been one of their standout guys on kick return coverage, not bad for a rook, especially one who has battled injuries for several years in college.
WR Mario Manningham – Giants, Round 3, #95
Take a puff, pass it around…Apparently if you went to Michigan, you can smoke weed and still get drafted…But it doesn’t mean you’ll practice much…He’s shown little in camp as he’s been nursing a quad injury.
WR Devin Thomas – Commanders, Round 2 #34
Was expected to battle Thrash for a spot in the rotation but instead has been left to battle a hamstring injury….Has missed most of camp but could see action in their next preseason game as he looked good apparently in this weeks practices
WR Malcolm Kelly – Commanders, Round 2 #51
What are the odds that both of these rookie WRs are nursing hammies?…He also had some knee strain early in camp that led to it getting scoped…He won’t see action for awhile…Strange…At the time of typing this, it was my understanding Kelly was still trying to organize a new 40 time trial with no media present…A 4.31 time was recorded but then again, Kelly ultimately wasn’t present either…It continues
TE Fred Davis – Commanders, Round 2#48
Of the 3 first picks for the Skins, who knew he’d have their best camp…Zorn seems to be high on him and plans on using a lot more 2 TE sets…We’ll see I guess
DE Rob Jackson – Commanders, Round 7 #242
I only mention him because this is a guy that may not make the depth chart despite showing glimpses in camp and in games…May end up hitting practice squad unless he’s plucked by other teams…Seems to be some ‘diamond in the rough’ about him.
Oddly enough, the biggest impact for WRs for the Skins in camp has been newcomer Billy McMullen (Vet waived from the Vikings)…Then again, their bigger acquisition was Jason Taylor and he recently has been afflicted with a case of plantas fascitiis…BTW, Zorn is impressing just about everyone with how well he has managed the club (And calling plays) thus far for someone with no head coaching experience.
