NFC playoff picture 2017: Technically, the Cowboys are still in the hunt

After two straight weeks of getting pummeled by NFC opponents, it’s really hard to think about the Dallas Cowboys making the 2017 playoffs. After losing to the Falcons, they lost hold of the final wild card spot. After losing to the Eagles, all hope of an NFC East repeat was dashed, and now they find themselves gasping their last breaths. How much trouble are they in? Let’s first look at the NFC playoff picture to see where they are.

The Cowboys currently reside in the 10th position for NFC playoff berths. Here is the crazy thing though, if the Seahawks lose tonight to the Falcons, Dallas will be only one game behind the final wild card spot.

There is not much to hang your hat on when it comes to Dallas, they have been playing some ugly football recently. But, for arguments sake, let’s say they magically got things turned around and started winning games. Could they slide into a wild card spot? They would have hope.

We have not beaten a single team in the NFC that has a winning record, in fact our only win against a team with a winning record was against the Chiefs, who just lost to the Giants last week.

And what is this business about turning things around? We are getting curb stomped every week now, losing by 20 minimum.

Still in the hunt for playoffs
Now there's a phrase I really didn't think I would be uttering before the season started.
But no I don't see us in the playoffs I think we'd be lucky to hit 8 and 8.
This is where I become a dual fan during the game I scream yell and cheer from beginning to end, but if we lose then I immediately start thinking about how high of a draft pick will have and how many holes we can fill with quality draft picks

As we start to get some of the injured guys back, I can definitely see us going on a winning streak and making the playoffs as a strong team IF ...
  1. Smith and Lee return before it’s too late and hold up physically, along with no other key injuries.
  2. Dak starts to settle down and looks more like he did last year and early this year regarding accuracy and decisions.
  3. DMac starts being used on 3rd downs and can present a threat.

The next 4 games are against teams without a winning record.

It's a real long shot. The NFC South will kill us. Saints and Panthers are looking like locks............. and we are a game behind AND are on the bad end of the tiebreaker with Atlanta (so essentially two games back of Atlanta). That loss in Atlanta was a death blow.

We don't have a winning record.

We don't, but the comment I was replying to was talking about how we haven't beaten any teams with a winning record. That is not an issue for the next 4 games (as it currently stands - only Oakland has a chance to change that by the time we play them). We do have a winning record, but we do have a better record than all of the teams we play the next 4 games.

If things go right this week, which they usually do not. But IF they do. We will be in a 4 way tie for the 6th WC spot.

We must win over the Chargers of course.
Vikings beat Lions, TB beats Atlanta which is unlikely, SF beats Seattle, also unlikely puts us in a 4 way tie.
Atlanta holds head to head tie breaker over us, but in a 3 or 4 way tie, the tie breakers are different. Unless teams eliminated puts it back to head to head. I would need to look it up.

But all these teams including in the mix play each other and some twice, or play their division leaders yet.
We win 3 of the next 4, which I do not have the confidence that can. But if we do, get Zeke back for the last 2 games. One being an important game with Seattle. And then if Philly has the division wrapped up, unless playing for a bye or home field, they may be resting starters against us.

So we are not out of it by no means. I will not hold my breath that we get there, not the way this team is playing right now. But it is possible.

True, in theory. But in that scenario, I believe conference record would be the tiebreaker and we'd be 4-4, Seattle would be 4-4 but Atlanta and Detroit would have been conference records.

If the Vikings beat Detroit, Detroits conf. record would be 4-4 as well. Atlanta is a problem though. They seem to hold all the tie breakers. They have head-to-head over Det, Dal, and Seattle. Their conf. record is also 5-1 right now. Their schedule is pretty brutal though. They have NO twice, Min, and they finish against Carolina...which might actually be a game we want them to win, depending on how things go the next few weeks. Carolina still also has NO and Min (and I am not counting out a Jets surprise this weekend).

Lions are 5-3 in the conference right now according to ESPN's standings.
