The NFC West looks like it may be the first division to have 4 playoff teams (if that’s even possible).

The division is undeniably strong and I think it rates up there with the NFC East in the early 90’s and the NFC Central in the early 2000’s.

I pity Arizona, what team has a harder road to travel?

It is possible...but since they only just went to the three-WC format, being the first to accomplish it would not be quite as impressive as it might sound. Still would be pretty darned impressive though.

The NFL had a 3 wildcard format from 1990 through 2001, and it has already happened 3 times. In 1994 and 1997 it was the NFC Central. In 1998 it was the AFC East.

Thanks, I'd completely forgotten that. Back in the 3-division days, of course.

From 1990-1994, it was possible for every team in a division to make the playoffs (the AFCC and NFCW had 4 teams). Didn't ever happen. So I guess that would be the thing that would be a "first."

Yeah, never has an entire division made the playoffs. Four teams made it 3 times out of 12 seasons, so 25%? It will happen eventually. I think it's possible for an entire division to be 13-3 if I'm not mistaken. That's a crazy thought.

You've taken me down a rabbit hole now. I did the math. Over that time period, if everything were random, you'd expect to see 3 WCs come from a single division about 1.1 times. It actually happened 3 times. Well, not all things are equal. Divisions play sets of games against a single division in the other conference and one in their own conference. Teams that get lucky enough to play weak divisions in those games have a substantial advantage. So 3 times in 12 years seems a little high, but not too bad.

Now, though, with 4 divisions and only 4 teams per division, the math is different.. The odds of it happening in any given conference in any given year are less than half what they were before. That works out to a likelihood of it happening once every 27 years. Again, that assumes all things are equal, and they aren't. The same schedule effects are in place, but also, for instance, we know that the NFC West teams are all pretty strong, relatively speaking, so they have a much better chance than a random collection of teams would. But I won't be holding my breath.

And yeah, an entire division can go 14-3 now. I'll go out on a limb and say they'd all make the playoffs.

What is interesting about probabilities is that they are rarely predictable in the short term. The likelihood that something will happen X amount of times in X amount of attempts or X amount of years, usually sorts itself out over the long haul. It's getting there that is erratic. Back in the 80s when I was a gambler I used to use the chaos of probability in casinos to some success. Never losing money. But never winning a lot either.

But yeah, I think all 4 teams in the NFC West will get in. But more to do with how good they are than chance. These divisions are certainly not random.
