NFL and HGH testing

I've heard a couple of interviews on local sports talk radio recently that speculate that Goodell is making a point by not showing any leniency on borderline failed drugs tests. They claim that in the past he would not suspend players with trace amounts in their system and would sometimes take their story into account. I have no idea if that's true, but I heard a similar story by more than one person that was interviewed.

They are claiming that the reason that he is cracking down is because the NFL wants HGH testing and the NFLPA is resisting it. The theory being that he going to crank up the punishment for substance abuse and PEDs until the NFLPA agrees to HGH testing.

My personal take is that the NFL should want players taking HGH because it probably keeps them on the field more which should benefit the Owners.

I think NFL should crack down on HGH, it ends up forcing players to use these drugs to be able to compete even if they don't want to use them. If you can't play off your natural ability then you don't belong in the NFL

Well, yeah, they do.

The NFL wants to avoid the APPEARANCE of a performance-enhancing drug (or substance abuse, or domestic violence, etc.) problem. PR drives this train.

I think it would be fun to see them maxed out on Roids, HGH and anything else they can get their hands on.

Maybe they could just have a Roid league where all the players go max PEDs. Maybe they could put that league somewhere like Russia where Roids are probably legal. Then the teams could help the players go max Roid. Then some of those roided up dudes from the Worlds Strongest Man competition could be Linemen. Some 4.3 forty college guy could probably be the 1st to break the 4.1 forty barrier.

I think it will put a lot of young men at risk who will be forced to use them so that they would have a chance to compete with those who do use. Game does not need HGH it has been a great game for a long time

On a more serious note, Mark Cuban suggested that Sports leagues should study HGH. It's highly possible that it's not bad if used properly and could be beneficial for treating injuries in both sports and the general population.

I don't really think anything comes close to the Roids they used back in the 70s and 80s in terms of both performance and side effects.

They are still using the roids and they also have regimens that hide the effects.

There are studies that have been done on long term use. Heck there is medication that patients use out of need but is not good for you long term. Heck I have been on medication and monitored closely and then taken off of it as my situation improved. I don't want to see some young kid feeling like the only chance he has to compete is by juicing up. This game does not need it to be great

Maybe Im in the minority here but I dont understand why PED are treated the same as recreational drugs in sports. To me a guy who is caught cheating like Shawn Merriman is 10 times worse then a guy with a drug problem like Josh Gordon. Does it really benefit the team or the player to have them gone for a year with out being able to contact the team or use its support system? Why are all drugs lumped into the same category in the NFL, I dont get it.

We both might both be a little sadistic and it would never work in our lawyered-up world, but I agree with you. I would 100% watch that league of explosive freaks.

It would be their choice - if you decide to play in this league, then you can take whatever horse tranquilizer or spliced dinosaur-DNA splurpee you can find. Bath salts for the defense at halftime! I think I'm half serious.

I think they all take something anyway. People are so surprised when guys retire and immediately drop 30+ lbs. Humans don't get that big just au naturale. A guy I knew in college who played pro OL for years (including a stint on the Boys) said he was basically told that he had to take some kind of juice after college to gain another 20-30 lbs and get up to pro strength.

Because the NFL doesn't really care about it's players or the "sanctity" of the game: they care about public perception. When public perception turns on their marijuana policy sufficiently, they'll change it.

Everything has gone public perception like "we know it all" and can draw lines ...but they are in the sand.
