NFL cancels Aug. 7 Hall of Fame Game between Bears, Rams

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- The NFL announced Thursday that it has canceled the Hall of Fame Game between the St. Louis Rams and Chicago Bears despite league owners voting in favor of a tentative deal to end the lockout, pending player approval.

The Rams and Bears originally were scheduled to open their training camps this weekend and play in the game to start the preseason schedule Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio. But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the game had to be dropped because the teams wouldn't have ample time to prepare.

"The time is just too short," he said. "Unfortunately, we will not be there to play the game there this year."

Apologies to the Canton residents, but it's a terrible game to watch if your team's not in it, so no loss.

That might be true for you.

But I'm sure the people in that area look forward to being able to go and experience the game and such. Oh well maybe they'll get to next year.

One thing that will be interesting once Pre-season starts is how long will starters play given the fact they have had no off season and now with limited practice since there will be no 2 a days? Will coaches be forced to play the starter longer to get them ready for the reg season?

It's true when they say that palyers of today are nothing at all like the players of the past. Back then, we had some damn good traditional teams in the NFL.

Today, we have collections of premadonna players acting like they're bigger than the game.

So it's fitting that by delaying their vote to recertify over on a deal they agreed to, that this game of tradition - played to celebrate former players - is being cancelled.

It's symbolic of just how disconnected current players are from the tradition of NFL football.

Tradition is certainly taking it on the chin, but the fault cannot be laid solely at the players' feet. Both parties should have compromised well-before last March's decertification and subsequent lockout. And when I say "well-before" I mean in the years following the owners opting out of the last CBA.

Oh, I totally agree. I remember the complete seasons of 1982 and 1987 that did not involve lost games or replacement players.
