Patrick McManamon, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports the NFL's competition committee is proposing to not allow teams to load up on one side of the ball on onside kicks. They feel eight or nine players could be dangerous and are considering a requirement for teams to have at least four players on each side of the ball.

NFL | Competition committee would like to change rule for wide receivers
Sun, 26 Mar 2006 08:50:13 -0800

Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the NFL's competition committee would like to see a rule that would allow wide receivers to reset if they have a minor flinch before the start of a play. Atlanta Falcons general manager and co-chairman of the committee Rich McKay said, "We're trying to find ways to limit that. The receiver would be given the opportunity to replay and there would be no stoppage." The committee is looking to limit the number of flags thrown.

Sun, 26 Mar 2006 08:49:47 -0800

Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the NFL's competition committee has discussed several controversial calls from Super Bowl XL. Under the proposed improvements, only the holding penalty against Seattle Seahawks OG Sean Locklear might have been changed. Atlanta Falcons general manager and co-chairman of the committee Rich McKay said, "If you do not see the entire foul, you cannot call holding. We want to make sure they actually see the foul."

NFL | L. Hunt to push for 14 playoff teams
Sun, 26 Mar 2006 07:56:58 -0800

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt will push for an expanded playoff field with 14 teams, seven from each conference. Hunt said, "It has merit for everybody, not just the Kansas City Chiefs. It creates more interest in more cities. That's the main thing. It is easier to sell tickets when you can say you were a playoff team." Hunt has pushed for more postseason teams before and it was met with plenty of resistance. It is likely it will again this time around. Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, who is also the co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee, said, "I'm not sure the sentiment has changed a lot."

I would be against both proposed rule changes.

WRs need to take off on the snap. They already get every advantage known to man.

Onsides are already a really low success option, no need to make them even more minimal.

I would be FOR the added playoff teams because you see divisions as the NFCE was last season loaded with talent and then others with total spares.

I would be AGAINST the added playoff teams because 8-8 (or worse) teams shouldn't qualify for the playoffs. There is enough mediocre football played during the regular season we don't need more in January.

McManamom also adds "football in general may be too dangerous, we want to replace real football with virtual football where players gather around X Boxes and face off, of course the images may be too violent to viewers at home so we're trying to look at ways to get around that too. Perhaps we can use the scenes from the old Batman TV series to say BAP or POW whenever there is a collision." In response, actors from the movie Brokeback Mountain told the league to "STOP being so gay." Elton John was also deeply offended.

Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the NFL's competition committee would like to see a rule that would allow wide receivers to do whatever the he** they wanted to do. Atlanta Falcons general manager and co-chairman of the committee Rich McKay said, "We currently don't feel that WR's have a big enough advantage over the smaller, faster DBs, there were over 1000 passes defenced last year, that's way too many." Under the new rules, the receiver would be given the freedom to kick, scratch, push, shove, and bite and there would be no stoppage." The committee is looking to limit the number of flags thrown (on the offense).

NFL | L. Hunt to push for 14 playoff teams
Sun, 26 Mar 2006 07:56:58 -0800

Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt continues to cry that he didn't make any money during the playoffs because his team is a big choker. He will push for an expanded playoff field with a 13 teams + KC Chiefs format. Hunt feels that under such a format, he still won't ever win a SB, but at least he'll be able to pay off his yacht. San Diego and Dallas also joined the "we wanted to be in the playoffs last year but didn't take care of business petition."

Well a 6 seed went to the Super Bowl.

Not sure there' smuch difference betweena 6th seed and a 7th.
This year a 10-6 team MISSED the playoffs and Dallas would have joined that group had they been focussed against St. Louis.

So even with 14 teams no team under 10-6 would have made the playoffs.

As Pitt demonstrated a 10-6 team can be better than a 13-3 one because schedules aren't equal.
If a team gets in the playoffs that shouldn't they won't last long.

In a "normal" year I would buy that. This year, NE off year, Palmer's knee, Indy's O-line, Plummer meltdown, questionable penalities, everything just fell into place for them.

What fell into place was Ben R getting healthy. If he hadn't got hurt they might have won the AFC.

I like the onside kick rule. I would suggest that it be 5 yards before the return team can recover the ball. That would really make things more interesting.

Onsides kicks do not need to be address...just more BS and changing things for the worse.

I am against the extra playoff teams... let's not water down the playoffs anymore, they were basically unwatchable last year.

I'm still looking for that holding call that they flagged Flozelle Adams for against the Commanders in that MNF game we lost...wiped out the potential game ending 1st down conversion...

In 2004 not just one but TWO 8-8 NFC teams made it into the playoffs. They really don't need to lower that bar any further.

Edit: Also, as was discussed at the time, it was highly uncommon for a 10-6 team NOT to get into the playoffs. It was a rare exception, not a problem that needs to be fixed.

I would be against the additional team in the playoffs as well. I just don't see where it would be benificial to unnecessarily complicate the playoff picture.
