Great idea. I'm all for minimizing human error and letting plays stand on their own merit rather than someone saying what it should be.

if they keep the use simple then im all for it. just use it for out of bounds type plays. kick offs and punts the chip will be way more precise for where the ball actually went out of bounds. also a sensor that extends the goal line out of bounds. most other things can be handled with the challenge system and replay

I've been saying this for years.

How easy would it be to just implant a chip that lets you know when the ball crosses the goal line or not?

well it would have to be something that encompasses the entire ball- if you have it in the middle you miss the ends and if its in one end or even both ends what about the middle? But I do agree that something like that used as an assist would be a good idea.

The article mentions that the league is discussing the idea with the same company which produced the sensor embedded within the soccer balls used for the FIFA World Cup. Here is a video explaining the technology which was used:

I'm kinda leaning this way.

The ball does not tell you when the knee is down. Otherwise it is not a bad idea but it does not eliminate instant replay and judgment calls.

And how does the rest of it work? Are officials going to have to have a little device that gives them the read out?

And wouldnt you have to mark the whole field for the chip to work?

yes if you want it to work in the middle of the field during 4th and shorts. I'm guessing the goaline would have to have an embedded magnetic strip of some sort (think red light cameras)

Did they use it this year? Didn't seem like it helped in the England vs. Germany game.

But I've thought they should do this for a long time. The whole ball would have to be sensored. I think that if there is a question, the replay system should work so that you could watch the video and look for the knee to hit then the sensors in the ball would tell you exactly where it is on the field at that point.

I guess I am a little old fashioned too, but if we are not going to update the game I want to go back and use the following rules too.

1. remove the markers at the sides of the goal line.
2. move the goal posts back to the actual goal line ( Now that made the goal line stands exciting! While we are at it, no pads on the goal post !)
3. no showing on TV the yellow line that shows us where the first line marker is.
4. Use the first down chains on only one side of the field.
5. None of that laying down a pad on the sideline where the first down is.
6. Face mask can only consist of 1 solid bar across the front of the helmet.
7. No replay's at all. The game is called on the field.
8. No finance checks of game officials allowed. All officials are allowed to place bets on games if done, where it is legal for everyone else. The only rule for officials betting is that they can't bet on a game they will be involved with.
9. No more stupid QB protection rules. The QB is just another player.
10. Do away with all the stupid protection rules. Still penalize for cut blocks, clipping, late hits ... etc (More like it was in the 50's and early sixties) Yes, you can legally pull down a RB by the shoulder pads from behind. Yes you can knock a WR from the ball without getting a penalty.
11. no more flags carried by coaches.
12. No relays shown on the screens in stadium.
13. No more than 6 cameras allowed to show a football game.
14. NFL has the right to censor or not allow Mediots to enter the stadium if they question official decisions too often, or otherwise take stances not held by the NFL.

In other words if we are are not going to move forward with technology, than let's play the game the way it was intended.
Otherwise - accept it and move forward!

Much of the progress we have made is in the interests of safety, and I surely don't agree with all of it.

I don't agree with the "progress" that has been made in order to facilitate higher scoring by almost crippling the defense in some areas (CB-WR interaction, etc.)

I'm not sold on utilizing electronics inside of a football in order to decide spots, etc. I think, for the most part, the officials and instant replay do a fair enough job at spotting a football. Human error has been, and always will be, part of the game...with any game, for that matter.

I'm sure one could easily get carried away with relying on electronics to determine what happens on the field. Inertial motion tracking sensors to determine who made contact first on a PI call?

Cutting edge electronic technology x football / human intervention = disaster.

I agree that human error has always been a part of the game (and as such, is always used as an argument against technological advancements on the field). What I don't understand about this argument is why someone WOULDN'T want to work to reduce or eliminate human error? I don't see why errors have to be such an organic part of the game that removing or reducing said errors will somehow diminish it.

I know a lot of people don't want the human side of the game removed, but you know, as long as the players are human I give two flips about who or what does the officiating...I just want it done correctly.

You certainly have a logical point, but it just seems like it would make it seem more artificial to me. That's just how I feel about it.:starspin

I agree and I'm not saying I want robots and computers officiating the game...I just don't get why some would actually prefer a referee spotting a ball 3 inches from where it ought to be rather than being absolutely exact.

I don't have a problem with the way the game is run now. It works against us sometimes, and it works for us sometimes (I always go back to the McNabb 4th down run late last year where the ball was [or wasn't it?] spotted incorrectly and it likely changed the outcome of the game).

I just don't mind the idea of removing all doubt. But I also don't think that these kinds of things pop up often enough to make it a huge concern, either.

I just want the MLB to switch to camera to call balls and strikes. I think the way some umpires call games in the MLB is an absolute freaking joke.
