Let me preface this....this is not a joke.

The league is considering a new rule that makes it illegal for a running back to lead with his head when running the ball outside the tackles.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ners-from-lowering-their-heads-into-tacklers/

But it's obvious, Goodell is trying to prepare the league for the upcoming multi-billion-dollar lawsuit from former players that threatens to take the league down entirely. He's trying to show proaction, but in doing so, he's ruining the league.

In what is now an incredibly liberal nanny-state America, he has right to be concerned. The government is trying to legislate EVERYTHING, and the courts are not likely to be favorable to the NFL these days.

If this passes, so might my interest in this game entirely. And it will only be the tip of the iceberg.

Stupid rule. It basically is telling running backs to give up and not get extra yards. Might as well call this the AD rule.

Imagine.

It's 4th and 2 with under two minutes remaining, down by 3. Demarco Murray breaks outside, lowers his head, and drives through the defender for a first down.

Flag. Now it's 4th and 17.

Who wants to watch that?

To me it's just a natural reflex to lower your head in that situation.

Silly stuff.

As stupid as they are they still can't possibly pass this.
Hope you're right, and I agree.

They'd have to call this penalty 30+ times a game. It happens ALL the time. Teams would have to abandon their running games altogether.

There's a lot of evidence that the source of chronic traumatic encephalopathy is repeated lower impact collisions (particularly to low weight players like corners) rather than repeated concussions. This is a very good rule.

I highly doubt this rule will ever take effect

I guess it depends on how/what the runner can do and how they are taught to do it.

It might help with concussions for the player. You do see many times a runner sees a defender coming at him and he just lowers his head like a battering ram for that extra yard or so.

Maybe they can be taught to lower down and hit with your shoulder and side of the helmet but not straight on with the crown of the helmet?

A Harvard researcher recently discovered that the best way to avoid football related head injuries is to not play football.

No one forces anyone into this profession.

If you were able to play pro football and make many millions in a relatively short period of time, would you play?
