IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys have moved closer to signing their entire 2016 draft class, reaching deals on Tuesday with fourth-round picks
Charles Tapper and
Dak Prescott.
Tapper, the 101st overall pick, will compete for playing time as an edge rusher in the Cowboys’ defensive line rotation. The three-year college starter produced seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss as a senior at Oklahoma.
Prescott, the 135th overall pick, is the third quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since 2001. He’ll develop as a backup behind long-time starter
Tony Romo.
A three-year starter and two-time All-American in college, Prescott was one of four players in FBS history to throw 70 touchdown passes and run for 40 touchdowns in his career. He joins a quarterback depth chart behind Romo that includes
Kellen Moore, a two-game starter last year while Romo was injured, and
Jameill Showers, who spent most of last year on the practice squad.
The Cowboys now have eight of their nine draft picks under contract: Prescott, Tapper, running back
Ezekiel Elliott, linebacker
Jaylon Smith, cornerback
Anthony Brown, safety
Kavon Frazier, running back
Darius Jackson and tight end
Rico Gathers. Only third-round pick
Maliek Collins is currently unsigned.
