NFL Defense Rankings: Browns, Cowboys, and Jets Among the Best in Week 7

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-defense-rankings/

They say defense wins championships. However, when you read who has the best defense in the NFL as we progress through the regular season, you'll understand why we should be skeptical of that old saying.

The NFL is an offensive league now. The rules committee has mostly rightfully legislated away the unnecessary violence from the game, but they have also made playing defensive back in the NFL impossible.

Defense isn't sticky from year to year. Consistency comes and goes because defensive personnel changes so frequently. But opposing QB play is sometimes an even bigger catalyst for defensive performance. Coverage is king, but the nature of coverage makes it tricky to predict.

The pass rush is more consistent, which is why those players often make more money than their defensive-back counterparts. But the great defenses boast both. Because of the volatile nature of defensive play in the NFL, all we can do until we see more regular-season games is look at the depth charts on paper and the games that have passed to stack these units.

Overreaction or reality: Reality

Holding a Chargers offense with quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Austin Ekeler and wide receiver Keenan Allen to 17 points, Los Angeles’ first game scoring under 20 all season, is a big deal. Even though the Cowboys only recorded one sack, All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons’ critical takedown of Herbert shortly before cornerback Stephon Gilmore hauled in the game-sealing interception, Dallas’ 47.6% pressure rate on Herbert was the highest he had faced all season. It was very apparent as Herbert missed multiple passes to open receivers after being flushed out of the pocket.

Nothing was perfect for Dallas on Monday night, but its defense came the closest of any of its three units. As Parsons said in this moment after Gilmore’s clutch interception in the video, “We’re back.” It’s certainly hard to argue with him at the moment.

7 of those points the Chargers score were a gift of a freak play and the refs calling PI on the 5 yard line.

let's see us do this against philly or miami
Like against San Fran and Arizona, there will be games this season where the defense does not play great. As the author of this article said, it's an offensive league. It's tough to shut down offenses week after week. I mean, Cleveland with a backup QB starting scored 19 points against San Fran's vaunted defense primarily because of what the Browns did against the 49ers offense. When you get little help from the offense, it's even harder for the defense to live up to high rankings.
