From the Bench: NFL Draft Expert Gives WVU's Bailey 2nd Round Grade, A+ Grade as "Pure Football Player"

Couple of blurbs from article...

“This guy scores a touchdown and then you look out and he’s on the kickoff team. Even more impressive is that he makes three or four tackles during the game to go along with those touchdowns,” Chavous said. “You want to know about Stedman Bailey? Watch what he did in this game. To me, what he did defines what Stedman Bailey is all about.”

“You saw in that (Pinstripe) Bowl game when everyone else checked out, he didn’t. He scored twice and played hard from start to finish,” said Chavous. “He played hard and had huge numbers and never complained if he wasn’t in the limelight. People tend to remember that monster game Tavon Austin had against Oklahoma, but Bailey had a game for the ages against Baylor (13 catches, 303 yards and five touchdowns)."

For those that have not seen much of him...

Would love to get this kid if he somehow slipped to us in the 4th or if we traded down in the 3rd.

You know I am a fan, I think Cowboys could scoop him up if he is there in the 3rd. I really think he would be in heavy consideration. He is a beast!

The way I see it, if Hopkins falls to the 2nd, we could take him, if Bailey falls to the 3rd or Williams in the 3rd. And lastly, if Boyce falls to the 5th he could be a target.

Those all to seem to be good fits.

Austin in the 1st could be considered but only if all our OL, S, and DT are gone off the board, I just find it unlikely but Jerry gets antsy sometimes and it could happen.

Bailey had ridiculous numberslast year. I'll agree on Boyce too.

Deceptively strong seems that defenders think they can man handle him then all of a sudden they are chasing him down field.

It is. I want a receiver from this draft.

me too. I think Bailey is clearly the better WR over Austin however Austin may be a better overall playmaker. Would LOVE to steal Bailey in the third. However, I feel like we absolutely have to go OL and DL in rounds 1 and 2. We also have to pick up a RB in rounds 3 or 4. We probably need another OL, preferrably Barrett Jones, in the late rounds for depth and competition and I think we also need a blocking TE. We're short at least one pick currently IMO so its going to take a trade down somewhere or a Spencer trade for multiple picks (in which case we then need another DE also). Would really be great to have an extra mid-round pick or two this year.

I'd move up in the 3rd if needed. Can play. We could use another WR in this thing.

He is 5'10 and runs a 4.52.. And he played on a team where literally every offensive players stats are completely inflated.

He is not a 3rd round talent let alone a 2nd round talent. I wouldn't touch this guy.

Here is a list of receivers I would take over steadman bailey that will go in the 2nd or later

Da'Rick Rogers
Terrance Williams
Markus Wheaton
Quinton Patton
Aaron Dobson
Kenny Stills
Cobi Hamilton

Trade up in the 3rd.. for a 5'10 slow WR? where is he gonna play exactly? We have Harris, Beasley, Coale who are all best suited for the slot at this level.. not to mention Miles Austin does great work in the slot and we are going to draft a 5'10 slow WR? Is he gonna get open outside the numbers? is he gonna be able to get up for catches over these NFL DB's? (34 inch vert which is very low for a WR)

I know he is a big name and a guy that produced but the fascination on this board with guys like him and Barrett Jones and others who have such limited upside is mind boggling. Do you want to draft the guys that will be the most successful pro's or do you want to draft guys that you've heard of from big name programs?

Coale? Beasley? Lol! I understand what your're saying but those guys couldn't carry Baileys jock. Stedman is a football player. Has drawn a lot of comparisons to Hines Ward for his party toughness and football savvy. I'd love Bailey in the 3rd.

These guys are on the team whether you like to it or not. If we are going to draft a wideout it should be someone who can play on the outside if Dez or Miles were to go down.

But yea, that is exactly what we need on this team.. guys who lack the athletic ability and size to succeed at their position but have savy and toughness.

Arkin might have all the savy and toughness in the world.. should we start him?

If you want to compare 2 guys who both have similar athleticism and ability and edge one over the other based on toughness and savy that is one thing but to want to take a wideout in the 3rd round who is so undersized and limited athletically makes 0 sense

Bailey is Steve (Panthers) Smith part 2 IMO. He would be a third round bargain. 72 of his catches last year went for either 1st downs or touchdowns. He can flat out play and I bet he is productive in the league for a decade.

Steve Smith
40: 4.41
Vertical: 38.5

Steadman Bailey
40: 4.52
Vertical: 34.5

When you are undersized you can make up for it if you have speed and athleticism.. When you are undersized and below average athletically things become increasingly difficult

Lacks athletic ability? Lmao! I'll have some of what you're drinking.

Compared to the other wideouts in this draft/Successful wideouts in the league he is severely athletically challenged. Feel free to go look at some combine numbers if you want
